Towage Deckhand

Job summary

TasPorts is looking for a motivated deckhand to support towage operations around Tasmania, based in Hobart. You will man vessels, plant and equipment as directed by the vessel master, and you will assist with general maintenance of the vessels.

We require proven sea or maritime experience, a General Purpose Hand Certificate of Competency (minimum), and the ability to obtain a current MSIC. Master qualification is desirable. The role may involve working across other ports in the state.

• Hold a General Purpose Hand Certificate of Competency (minimum).
• Possess or be able to obtain an MSIC certification.
• Master qualification or the ability to obtain certification is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Manning vessel, plant and equipment as directed.
• Complete maintenance tasks including painting and deck/engine room upkeep.
• Watch keeping and vessel keeping duties as directed by the Master.
• Assist in towage operations and contract work across ports as needed.
• Contribute to a safe working environment and TasPorts HSE initiatives.

About the role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated deckhand to assist with towage operations by manning vessels, plant, and equipment as directed by the vessel master, engineer, or management. Reporting to the Manager Towage and the Tug Master onboard, the position also involves general maintenance of the vessels.

This is a permanent, full-time position based in Hobart, Tasmania. Please note we are recruiting for a number of Towage positions around the state, please ensure you apply for the role you are most interested in.

Key responsibilities include

• Manning vessel, plant and equipment as directed.

• Complete maintenance tasks, including painting, deck and or engine room maintenance, rope splicing.

• Watch keeping and vessel keeping duties as directed by vessel Master.

• Flexibility to assist in towage operations and contract work at times in other areas within the state, in particular assisting from time to time in other ports and with other crews within the organisation.

• Ensure a safe working environment is achieved and maintained and participating in all TasPorts HSE systems and initiatives.

What you will have

• Proven experience at sea or within the maritime industry.

• General Purpose Hand Certificate of Competency (Minimum)..

• Possession of, or ability to obtain and retain, a current Maritime Security Identification Card (MSIC).

• Master qualification or the ability to obtain certification (desirable).
