Job summary

Liontown is seeking a Technician – Technology Communications to join our Kathleen Valley operations on an 8:6 roster. You will install, maintain and fault-find surface and underground communications systems to support safe, efficient mining operations.

The role covers radio networks, fibre, cabling, tower work, and on-site IT support, working closely with technology teams and vendors. Relevant certifications and a passion for safety on site are essential.

Qualifications

  • Site-based communications role in mining or remote environments.
  • RF/wireless systems expertise including radio networks and antennas.
  • ACMA cabling registration and optical fibre coverage desirable.
  • IT certifications such as CompTIA A+ or Network+ are beneficial; willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Australian driver’s license and Working at Heights certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, maintain, and fault-find radio networks (DMR, TETRA) and private LTE/site wireless networks.
  • Maintain radio repeaters, base stations, remote radios, and leaky feeder systems; perform RF testing and coverage verification.
  • Perform antenna selection, installation, alignment, and optimisation; support microwave/backhaul systems.
  • Support personnel and vehicle tracking, proximity Detection, CCTV across surface/underground areas.
  • Conduct routine checks and fault finding to maintain high system availability; assist expansion of comms infrastructure.
  • Support cabling and fibre-optic infrastructure; basic fibre testing and repairs coordination.
  • Maintain cabling routes, terminations, and asset records; perform fibre splicing and OTDR testing as required.
  • Install, terminate, and test copper and Ethernet cabling per ACMA cabling requirements.
  • Perform tower climbing and elevated works including antenna, feeder, and waveguide installation.

The Opportunity

The Technician - Technology Communications is a site-based role on an 8:6 roster, responsible for the installation, maintenance, and fault-finding of surface and underground communications systems that support safe and reliable mining operations.

The role provides hands-on technical support for radio and wireless communications, fibre optic and structured cabling infrastructure, communications towers, and personnel and vehicle tracking and safety systems across the site, both surface and underground, that are critical to personnel safety, production continuity, and business operations.

The Technology Communications Technician also provides basic on-site technology support to end users when not engaged on communications duties, and works closely with central technology teams and external vendors.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Installs, configures, maintains, and fault-finds VHF/UHF analogue and digital radio networks (DMR, TETRA), and private LTE or site wireless mesh networks where deployed.
  • Maintains radio repeaters, base stations, remote field radios, and leaky feeder systems in underground workings, and conducts RF testing, signal analysis, and coverage verification.
  • Performs antenna selection, installation, alignment, and optimisation, and supports microwave and point-to-point radio backhaul systems.
  • Supports and maintains personnel and vehicle tracking, proximity detection, collision avoidance, and CCTV systems across surface and underground areas.
  • Conducts routine checks and fault finding to maintain high system availability, and supports expansion of communications infrastructure as required.
  • Supports structured cabling and fibre-optic infrastructure across site facilities, including basic fibre testing, fault identification, and coordination of repairs.
  • Maintains accurate records of cabling routes, terminations, and assets.
  • Performs basic fibre splicing and OTDR testing where required.
  • Installs, terminates, and tests copper and Ethernet cabling across site facilities and field enclosures in accordance with ACMA cabling requirements.
  • Performs communications tower climbing and elevated work, including antenna, feeder, coax, and waveguide installation and replacement.
  • Performs microwave dish alignment, acceptance testing, and inspection of towers and masts.
  • Ensures all working-at-heights activities comply with site and legislative safety requirements, including tower rescue readiness.
  • Maintains communications power systems, including UPS, DC supplies, batteries, and solar-powered remote sites.
  • Maintains grounding, earthing, and lightning protection systems for communications infrastructure.
  • Supports deployment and maintenance of temporary and mobile communications infrastructure, including trailer-mounted towers, temporary pit or dump communications, and remote monitoring or telemetry sites
What We’re Looking For
  • Demonstrated experience in a site-based communications support role, ideally with exposure to basic end-user technology support.
  • Experience within mining, heavy industry, or remote operational environments.
  • Practical exposure to surface and underground operational settings.
  • Familiarity with communications and operational technology (OT) environments used in mining.
  • Hands‑on experience with RF and wireless communications systems, including radio networks, repeaters, and antenna systems.
  • Proven experience or demonstrated capability in communications tower climbing and elevated works.
  • Strong fault‑finding capability across RF, wireless, communications network, and field power infrastructure.
  • Certificate III or IV in Electronics and Communications, Telecommunications, or Electrical, or equivalent demonstrated industry experience.
  • ACMA Open Cabling Registration, with Optical Fibre and Structured Cabling endorsements (desirable)
  • Industry IT certifications such as CompTIA A+ or Network+ (desirable), to support on‑site technology support duties, or willingness to obtain.
  • Valid Australian driver’s licence
  • Working at Heights certification (required).
  • Tower Rescue certification, or willingness to obtain.
  • First Aid certificate.
  • EWP High Risk Work Licence (desirable).
  • Confined Space entry certification (desirable, site dependent).
  • National Police Clearance (required prior to commencement)
  • Pre‑employment medical assessment (required prior to commencement)
