Job summary

Downer seeks an experienced Level 5 Leading Hand / Second in Charge to join our Water Main Renewals crew. This hands-on role blends field delivery with site leadership alongside the Foreman and Pipelines team.

You will lead crews, coordinate subcontractors, manage productivity and safety, and support ongoing training to advance your career with Downer's energy and utilities division.

Qualifications

• Minimum 12 months' experience in water renewals, pipeline construction, plumbing or related civil works.
• White Card (Construction Induction) and a current Driver's licence including Light Rigid.
• First Aid Level 2 and CPR certification required.
• Class B Asbestos Removalist qualification preferred.
• Ability to oversee site operations in the Foreman’s absence and coordinate subcontractors.

Responsibilities

• Lead crews and coordinate subcontractors to deliver water infrastructure projects.
• Maintain productivity and ensure safe, high-quality outcomes.
• Assist Foreman in site operations and daily administration.
• Complete daily paperwork and site records to a high standard.
• Uphold risk management and safe work practices on all tasks.

Technician - Leading Hand Second In Charge

The Opportunity

Downer's Energy & Utilities team is seeking an experienced Level 5 Leading Hand / Second in Charge to join our Water Main Renewals crew.

Working alongside the Foreman and Pipelines team, you'll play a key role in delivering multiple water infrastructure projects while helping lead crews, coordinating subcontractors, maintaining productivity and ensuring all works are completed safely and efficiently.

This is an ideal opportunity for a skilled water renewal, pipeline or civil construction professional who enjoys a hands-on role while stepping up into site leadership responsibilities.

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a motivated team player with experience in water renewals, plumbing or pipeline construction who can confidently lead by example and support the crew in achieving safe, high-quality outcomes.

To be successful, you will have:

• Minimum 12 months' experience in water renewals, pipeline construction, plumbing or related civil infrastructure works
• White Card (Construction Industry Induction)
• Current Driver's Licence, including Light Rigid licence
• First Aid Level 2 and CPR certification
• Class B Asbestos Removalist qualification
• Demonstrated ability to oversee site operations in the absence of the Foreman
• Experience coordinating subcontractors and supporting crew productivity
• Strong understanding of risk management and safe work practices
• Ability to accurately set out, measure and complete works to a high standard
• Strong communication skills when dealing with customers, residents and stakeholders
• Capability to complete daily paperwork and site administration requirements
