Job summary

UniSC’s Academic Support Unit invites applications for a Technical Assistant (Science) to support undergraduate teaching. You will help prepare laboratories, equipment and consumables, assist with pack-up and cleaning, and maintain a safe learning environment.

Some travel between campuses may be required. You will be a practical, reliable team member with good communication skills, capable of managing tasks in a busy academic setting and following safety procedures.

Qualifications

• Diploma or relevant experience in teaching or laboratory support.
• Experience providing practical and technical support in a teaching/lab environment.
• Effective communication and teamwork in a busy academic setting.
• Ability to manage competing demands in a client-focused environment.
• Good manual handling and safe operation of lab tasks.
• Knowledge of workplace health and safety practices and SOPs.
• Current driver's licence.

Responsibilities

• Assist with preparing, setting up and packing down equipment for Science practical classes.
• Prepare simple solutions, label tubes and restock consumables.
• Clean, maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment and facilities.
• Support safe and effective operation of teaching laboratories.

• Academic Support Unit | UniSC Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs or UniSC Moreton Bay, Petrie
• Level 4, $76,275 - $80,218 p.a, plus up to 17% employer superannuation
• Part-time (18.13 hours per week), ongoing appointment

The Opportunity

Join UniSC’s Academic Support Unit as a Technical Assistant (Science) and provide practical, hands-on support for undergraduate Science teaching. Working alongside experienced technical staff, you will help prepare laboratories, equipment and consumables for practical classes, assist with pack-up and cleaning, and contribute to maintaining a safe and well-organised learning environment for students. Some travel between campuses may be required.

You will

• assist with preparing, setting up and packing down equipment, materials and consumables for Science practical classes;
• prepare simple solutions, aliquot materials, label tubes and laboratory items, and restock consumables as required;
• clean, maintain and assist with the routine calibration of laboratory equipment and facilities; and
• support the safe and effective operation of teaching laboratories in accordance with University procedures.

About you

You are a practical and reliable team member who enjoys working in a hands-on environment and takes pride in supporting quality teaching and learning. You will be organised, safety-conscious and comfortable managing practical tasks in a busy academic environment. With good communication skills and a collaborative approach, you will work effectively with technical staff and contribute to a positive and inclusive workplace.

You will possess:

• A relevant Diploma, or a combination of relevant experience and education/training.
• Demonstrated experience providing practical and technical support in a teaching or laboratory environment.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work positively and collaboratively as part of a team.
• The ability to manage competing demands and work effectively in a changing, client-focused academic environment.
• Good manual handling skills and the ability to safely perform tasks involving lifting, carrying, bending and twisting, including moving and storing equipment.
• Sound knowledge of workplace health and safety practices and the ability to apply safe operating procedures in a laboratory environment.
• A current driver's licence.
