Job summary

The Department of Communities and Justice is seeking a Correctional Officer in New South Wales to oversee and support custody operations across prisons and court cells. You will be part of a hands-on, safety‑driven team focused on good judgement and clear communication.

You will supervise inmates, conduct headcounts, monitor movements and support work programs; training in use of force is provided to ensure safe, appropriate responses.

Qualifications

  • Minimum age 18 years old.
  • Hold a current Provisional P1 Drivers Licence.
  • Be an Australia or New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Willing to complete Certificate III in Correctional Practice.
  • Meet the medical standards to be a correctional officer and have reasonable level of fitness.
  • Candidates will be required to provide details of visible body art or modifications.

  • Probationary Correctional Officers receive a base salary: $77,406 per annum.
  • Uniform allowance: $450 per annum.
  • Environment allowance: $1,272 per annum.
  • Superannuation: employer superannuation contributions 13%
  • Penalty rates apply for eligible shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays.
What does a Correctional Officer do?

Correctional Officers play an important role in keeping NSW communities safe. Working across prisons and court cells, they supervise and manage inmates in secured environments. It's a hands on job where you'll need good judgement, clear communication and the ability to work as part of a team. Some days will be routine. You may be conducting headcounts, completing searches, monitoring movements or helping run work and other programs. Other days you may need to deal with situations that require you to stay calm and make decisions under pressure. Use of force is a real part of custodial work, and you'll be trained in when and how it can be used safely and appropriately.

  • Meet the medical standards to be a correctional officer and have reasonable level of fitness.
  • Candidates will be required to provide details of visible body art or modifications that are on the face, scalp, ears, neck, or hands as well as tattoos or modifications of an offensive nature. For this policy, this is specific to the anything visible beyond the fastened collar or buttoned cuff of a long sleeve shirt. Please refer to the dress manual below for further information.
