Job summary

The Department of Communities and Justice in NSW is seeking motivated individuals to become Correctional Officers at Bathurst and other centres. This hands-on role requires good judgement, clear communication and teamwork to supervise inmates and ensure safety.

You will complete a 12-week paid training course and study for a nationally recognised Certificate III in Correctional Practice. The base salary includes allowances and 13% employer superannuation, with penalties for eligible shifts.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18 years.
• Current Provisional P1 Driver's Licence.
• Australian or New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident.
• Willing to complete Certificate III in Correctional Practice.
• Meet medical standards to be a correctional officer and be reasonably fit.
• Provide details of visible body art or modifications as per policy.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and manage inmates in secured environments across prisons and court cells.
• Conduct headcounts, complete searches, monitor movements.
• Help run work programs and other custodial activities.
• Apply use of force safely when required and as trained.

You will also receive a competitive base salary, along with additional allowances and benefits. Your remuneration includes:

• Probationary Correctional Officers receive a base salary: $77,406 per annum.
• Casual Correctional Officers receive $39.06 plus loadings
• Uniform allowance: $450 per annum.
• Environment allowance: $1,272 per annum.
• Superannuation: employer superannuation contributions 13%
• Penalty rates apply for eligible shifts, including nights, weekends and public holidays.

What does a Correctional Officer do?

Correctional Officers play an important role in keeping NSW communities safe. Working across prisons and court cells, they supervise and manage inmates in secured environments. It’s a hands on job where you’ll need good judgement, clear communication and the ability to work as part of a team. Some days will be routine. You may be conducting headcounts, completing searches, monitoring movements or helping run work and other programs. Other days you may need to deal with situations that require you to stay calm and make decisions under pressure. Use of force is a real part of custodial work, and you’ll be trained in when and how it can be used safely and appropriately.

Eligibility requirements

• Minimum age of 18 years old
• Hold a minimum of a current Provisional P1 Drivers Licence
• Be an Australia or New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Willing to complete Certificate III in Correctional Practice.
• Meet the medical standards to be a correctional officer and have reasonable level of fitness.
• Candidates will be required to provide details of visible body art or modifications that are on the face, scalp, ears, neck, or hands as well as tattoos or modifications of an offensive nature. For this policy, this is specific to the anything visible beyond the fastened collar or buttoned cuff of a long sleeve shirt. Please refer to the dress manual below for further information.
