Job summary

Cipher Recruitment is seeking a System & Database Administrator to manage the client infrastructure, cloud platforms, identity services and SQL Server environments in a hybrid Brisbane setup. You will ensure security, availability and operational excellence across Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Intune.

Responsibilities include patching, backups, data integrity, fault resolution, and collaboration with MSPs and vendors to maintain performance and compliance.

Qualifications

• Degree, Diploma or equivalent experience in Information Technology or a related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years' experience in systems administration, infrastructure administration (70% of the role).
• Database Administration (20% of the role), including copying databases and moving databases.
• Familiarity with SQL Database, including patching and safe shutdowns.
• Experience managing databases when splitting a database from one server.
• Not coding or managing the tables inside the database.
• Experience administering Microsoft 365, Azure and Windows Server environments.
• Experience with Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory and identity management.
• Hands-on SQL Server administration including backup, recovery, security and performance tuning.
• Experience with Microsoft Intune and endpoint management technologies.
• Understanding of cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity and operational support practices.
• Demonstrated ITIL and ITSM process understanding.
• Strong communication and documentation skills.
• Valid driver’s licence and right to work in Australia.
• Experience with Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, or comparable data integration platforms.
• Vendor certifications in SQL Server, Microsoft Azure, or relevant platform applications.
• Experience supporting multi-campus IT operations across geographically distributed locations.
• Current certification in ITIL-aligned strategies or ITSM processes.

Responsibilities

• Administer and maintain Microsoft 365, Azure and hybrid infrastructure environments.

• Support Microsoft Intune administration and endpoint management platforms.
• Monitor system health, availability, performance and capacity; support backup and DR capabilities.
• Maintain technical documentation, runbooks and SOPs.
• Participate in infrastructure projects and improvement initiatives.
• Administer and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments.
• Perform database maintenance, backups, integrity checks and performance tuning.
• Monitor database health, access controls and security roles.
• Support database upgrades, migrations and lifecycle management.
• Coordinate vendor support for database incidents.
• Support SQL-based data extraction and operational reporting.
• Monitor data platform health and investigate failures or performance issues.
• Contribute to information governance, data validation and retention initiatives.
• Administer access controls, MFA and Conditional Access; contribute to security hardening and patching.
• Support audit, governance and compliance activities.
• Maintain backup, retention and recovery controls.
• Act as escalation point for incidents; diagnose and resolve complex issues.

Brisbane, QLD | 3 days onsite / 2 days WFH (can change based on workload)

$108,000–$122,000 base + superannuation (Flexible for a higher salary for a more senior candidate) - Non for profit tax benefits will be provided + 15% superannuation

The System & Database Administrator (SDA) is responsible for the administration, maintenance, security and optimisation of the client's infrastructure, cloud platforms, identity services and database environments.

The role ensures core technology services remain secure, available, reliable and fit for purpose while supporting operational excellence, cybersecurity requirements and organisational growth.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Infrastructure & Platform Administration

• Administer Microsoft 365, Azure and hybrid infrastructure environments.
• Maintain Windows Server operating systems and associated infrastructure services.
• Administer Microsoft Entra ID, Active Directory and identity-related services.
• Support Microsoft Intune administration and endpoint management platforms.
• Monitor system health, availability, performance and capacity.
• Support backup, recovery and disaster recovery capabilities.
• Maintain technical documentation, operational runbooks and standard operating procedures.
• Participate in infrastructure projects and technology improvement initiatives.

Database Administration

• Administer and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments.
• Execute and monitor database maintenance, including backups, integrity checks, index optimisation and performance tuning.
• Monitor database health, availability and capacity.
• Manage database access controls, security roles and permissions.
• Support database upgrades, migrations and lifecycle management.
• Troubleshoot database incidents and coordinate specialist vendor support.

Data & Platform Services

• Support Microsoft Fabric environments and associated data services.
• Assist with SQL-based data extraction and operational reporting requirements.
• Monitor data platform health and investigate failures or performance issues.
• Conduct data validation and integrity checks.
• Support integration services between cloud, infrastructure and data platforms.
• Contribute to information management, data governance and retention initiatives.

Identity, Security & Compliance

• Administer Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID.
• Manage user lifecycle processes and privileged access controls.
• Maintain role-based access models aligned with least-privilege principles.
• Support Multi-Factor Authentication and Conditional Access controls.
• Participate in vulnerability remediation, security hardening and platform patching.
• Support audit, compliance and governance activities.
• Maintain backup, retention and recovery controls.

Incident Management & Operational Support

• Act as an escalation point for infrastructure, platform and database incidents.
• Investigate, diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.
• Coordinate with MSPs, vendors and specialist providers.
• Conduct root cause analysis and identify preventative measures.
• Maintain knowledge articles, technical guides and troubleshooting documentation.

Essential Qualifications & Experience
