Job summary

IAG Defence and National Security (DNS) is part of IAG, supporting Defence and national security programs across Australia. We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to support a major capability modernization program focused on secure communications, interoperability and capability assurance in Canberra, ACT.

Role involves planning, coordination, assessment and ongoing management of mission-critical Defence capabilities, with strong emphasis on governance, risk management and stakeholder

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated systems engineering experience in Defence, aerospace, or related technology environments.
  • Ability to support testing, evaluation, verification and validation of complex systems.
  • Strong governance, planning and technical reporting capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, plan and coordinate trials for new or modified capabilities.
  • Assess operational effectiveness and suitability against baselines.
  • Provide specialist engineering advice on testing, evaluation and integration.
  • Develop evidence-based recommendations for capability decisions and readiness activities.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to support a major Defence capability modernisation program focused on secure communications, interoperability and capability assurance. Working within a complex stakeholder environment, you will contribute to the planning, coordination, assessment and ongoing management of mission‑critical Defence capabilities. This opportunity is suited to experienced systems engineering professionals who can combine strong technical expertise with stakeholder engagement, risk management and delivery oversight.

We are particularly interested in individuals who enjoy working across capability life cycles, supporting technical governance and helping deliver outcomes that enable operational effectiveness across Defence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify, manage and coordinate trials required for new or modified capabilities, including risk identification and treatment activities.
  • Plan, conduct and report on assessments of operational effectiveness and operational suitability against agreed baselines.
  • Analyse test and evaluation outcomes to determine whether capabilities meet required certification and performance standards.
  • Provide specialist engineering advice relating to capability testing, evaluation and integration activities.
  • Develop evidence‑based recommendations to support capability decisions, milestone reviews and operational readiness activities.
  • Assist with the development and execution of Test and Evaluation Management Plans and associated activities.
  • Support trial safety planning, risk assessments and compliance activities.
  • Coordinate test and evaluation activities across multiple stakeholder groups to achieve integrated capability outcomes.
  • Support capability acceptance activities, defect management processes and technical risk mitigation.
  • Provide advice to project and program stakeholders on testing methodologies, planning, scheduling, execution and reporting.
About You
  • Demonstrated experience as a Systems Engineer within complex Defence, aerospace, communications, cyber, C4ISR or technology environments.
  • Strong understanding of systems engineering principles, capability lifecycle management and technical governance.
  • Experience supporting testing, evaluation, verification and validation activities for complex systems.
  • Ability to analyse technical data and translate findings into practical recommendations and decision‑support material.
  • Experience developing technical documentation, plans, reports, engineering artefacts and governance products.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to build relationships across technical, operational and executive audiences.
  • Experience coordinating activities across multiple projects, teams and external organisations.
  • Defence experience in a similar role.

  • Security Clearance: Candidates must hold a current NV1 Security Clearance.
