Job summary

Rio Tinto is seeking a Superintendent Planning & Improvement to deliver operational excellence through integrated business planning, governance and continuous improvement. You will lead the Planning & Improvement team and collaborate with operational leaders to enhance performance and governance across a complex mining environment.

Reporting to the Safety & Performance Manager, this role emphasizes safety, mentorship and delivering measurable business outcomes.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities; translate insights into actions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Business Planning & Improvement team with a focus on safety and continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate annual and strategic business planning aligned with long-term objectives.
  • Partner with operational leaders to identify performance opportunities and remove bottlenecks.
  • Lead governance and assurance activities supporting plans and risk management.
  • Drive improvement initiatives using SPS and other frameworks.
  • Coach and mentor teams to strengthen planning, governance and performance outcomes.
  • Coordinate assurance across multiple lines of defence.
  • Monitor performance and implement actions for sustainable excellence.

About the role

We are looking for a Superintendent Business Planning & Improvement to help deliver operational excellence through integrated business planning, governance and continuous improvement. Reporting to the Safety & Performance Manager, you will lead the Business Planning & Improvement team and provide leadership across business planning, operational performance, governance and improvement initiatives. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys leading people, partnering with operational leaders and driving meaningful business outcomes across a complex operational environment.

What you’ll be doing
  • Lead and develop the Business Planning & Improvement team, fostering a strong safety culture, collaboration and continuous improvement mindset.
  • Coordinate annual and strategic business planning activities to ensure alignment with short, medium and long-term business objectives.
  • Partner with operational leaders to identify performance opportunities, remove bottlenecks and improve operational effectiveness.
  • Lead governance and assurance activities that support business plans, improvement programs and risk management requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives using the Safe Production System (SPS) and other improvement frameworks.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and technical support to operational teams to strengthen planning, governance and performance outcomes.
  • Coordinate and support assurance activities across first, second and external lines of assurance.
  • Monitor business performance, identify trends and implement actions that support sustainable operational excellence.
About you

You are a collaborative and influential leader with a passion for improving operational performance and developing people. You are comfortable working across multiple disciplines, simplifying complexity and driving outcomes through others.

Demonstrated experience leading business planning, operational improvement, governance or performance management functions within mining, heavy industry or another complex operational environment.

Experience developing and implementing business improvement initiatives that deliver measurable operational outcomes.

Strong analytical and problem-solving capability, with experience translating insights into practical business actions.

Experience managing assurance, governance, risk management or operational performance processes.

A degree qualification in business, engineering or a related technical discipline and a current Western Australian C Class Driver's Licence (Manual).

Helpful for Success

Experience applying Lean Six Sigma, Safe Production System (SPS) or similar continuous improvement methodologies.

Experience working with cross-functional operational leadership teams in a large-scale industrial environment.

Exposure to contractor management, capital project governance or operational risk management activities

Where you’ll be working

Located approximately 95km northwest of Newman in the East Pilbara, Yandicoogina is one of Australia's highest-producing iron ore mines. The site produces unique Hamersley Iron Yandi (HIY) fines and operates a fleet of autonomous haul trucks and drills, supporting efficient and safe operations.

Yandicoogina is recognised for its strong culture of teamwork, safety, and innovation, with a pioneering spirit. The mine supports a fly-in fly-out workforce from multiple regional hubs, including Perth, Busselton, and Derby – enhancing accessibility and community engagement across Western Australia.
