Job summary

Downer is seeking a Protection & Control Technician to join our Power Projects Team in Victoria. You will support pre-commissioning and commissioning of Zone Substations, Transmission Substations and Data Centre Substations across regional Vic and Metro Melbourne.

The ideal candidate has 2–5 years HV protection testing experience, an Advanced Diploma in Power Systems or Electrical Engineering, and hands-on SCADA/RTU knowledge with testing tools such as OMICRON, Doble or Megger.

Qualifications

• Advanced Diploma in Power Systems or Electrical Engineering required.
• 2–5 years HV protection and control testing experience.
• Experience in high-voltage switchyards and substations.
• Knowledge of SCADA/RTU and control systems.
• Experience with commissioning HV infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Ensure protection, controls and SCADA operate per drawings and setting files.
• Perform secondary systems commissioning on Greenfield and Brownfield sites.
• Test and commission secondary systems, SCADA, RTU and related equipment.
• Conduct fault finding and implement system upgrades.
• Perform secondary testing on CTs, VTs, breakers and other HV equipment.
• Conduct secondary injection testing across protection schemes.

The Opportunity

Due to continued growth within our Power Projects Team, we are seeking a skilled Protection & Control Technician to join our delivery group. This role plays a pivotal part in the pre-commissioning and commissioning of Zone Substations, Transmissions Substations and Utility owned Data Centre Substations across regional Vic, Metro Melbourne, and surrounding areas. You'll work collaboratively with internal teams and external clients to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant testing on both Greenfield and Brownfield infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

• Ensuring primary and secondary protection, controls and SCADA systems operate as per drawings and setting files
• Performing secondary systems commissioning on Greenfield and Brownfield sites
• Testing and commissioning secondary systems, SCADA, RTU, and associated equipment
• Conducting fault finding and implementing system upgrades
• Performing secondary testing on CTs, VTs, circuit breakers, and other HV equipment
• Conducting secondary injection testing across a wide range of protection schemes, including Transformer, cable, overcurrent, earth fault, differential, and distance protection systems.

About You

• Hold an Advanced Diploma in Power Systems or Electrical Engineering
• 2 to 5 years of relevant experience in HV protection and control testing
• Proven experience working in high-voltage switchyards and substations
• Strong fault-finding skills and deep knowledge of both primary and secondary systems
• Sound knowledge of SCADA, RTUs, and related control systems
• Demonstrated experience with commissioning processes on HV infrastructure
• Practical experience using test equipment such as: OMICRON, Doble, Megger, or equivalent platforms
• Ability to read and interpret schematic and wiring diagrams
• Strong computer literacy and technical documentation skills
• Excellent communication, self-management, and customer liaison abilities
• Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a site-based team
