Job summary

Aecom in Melbourne seeks a Fire Safety Engineer to join our Power Projects team in a hybrid role, delivering protection and control testing across Greenfield and Brownfield substations. You will contribute to pre-commissioning and commissioning activities, ensuring primary/secondary protection, SCADA, RTU and related equipment operate per drawings and settings.

The ideal candidate holds an Advanced Diploma in Power Systems or Electrical Engineering, 2–5 years HV protection experience, and strong

Qualifications

  • Hold an Advanced Diploma in Power Systems or Electrical Engineering.
  • 2–5 years of HV protection and control testing experience.
  • Proven experience in high-voltage switchyards and substations.
  • Strong fault-finding skills and knowledge of primary and secondary systems.
  • Sound knowledge of SCADA, RTUs and related control systems.
  • Experience with commissioning processes on HV infrastructure.
  • Practical use of test equipment such as OMICRON, Doble, Megger or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring primary and secondary protection, controls and SCADA systems operate per drawings and setting files.
  • Performing secondary systems commissioning on Greenfield and Brownfield sites.
  • Testing and commissioning secondary systems, SCADA, RTU and related equipment.
  • Conducting fault finding and implementing system upgrades.
  • Performing secondary testing on CTs, VTs, circuit breakers and other HV equipment.
  • Conducting secondary injection testing across protection schemes (transformer, cable, overcurrent, earth fault, differential, distance).

The Opportunity

Due to continued growth within our Power Projects Team, we are seeking a skilled Protection & Control Technician to join our delivery group. This role plays a pivotal part in the pre-commissioning and commissioning of Zone Substations, Transmissions Substations and Utility owned Data Centre Substations across regional Vic, Metro Melbourne, and surrounding areas.

You’ll work collaboratively with internal teams and external clients to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant testing on both Greenfield and Brownfield infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strong fault-finding skills and deep knowledge of both primary and secondary systems
  • Sound knowledge of SCADA, RTUs, and related control systems
  • Demonstrated experience with commissioning processes on HV infrastructure
  • Practical experience using test equipment such as OMICRON, Doble, Megger, or equivalent platforms
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic and wiring diagrams
  • Strong computer literacy and technical documentation skills
  • Excellent communication, self-management, and customer liaison abilities
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a site-based team
