Job summary
Fortescue is seeking an executive-level Director of Research & Development to set the technical direction for Green Iron and Industrial Hydrogen platforms. Lead the science and engineering organisation, shaping investment and partnerships, with a portfolio spanning green iron, hydrogen systems, and related technologies.
The role reports to the CEO and drives technology from lab to commercial readiness, ensuring safe, scalable, and manufacturable solutions while developing board-ready investment
Qualifications
- At least 15 years leading industrial R&D with lab-to-deployment track record.
- Deep expertise in two areas such as electrochemistry, hydrogen systems, or metallurgical processing.
- Experience leading product development, scale-up and technology validation.
- Commercial experience building business cases and partnerships with IP awareness.
- Proven ability to lead large multidisciplinary organisations with safety focus.
- Experience productising and establishing sustainment models for fielded products.
- Comfort presenting investment considerations to executives and boards.
- Willingness to be Perth-based or relocate to maintain site presence.
Responsibilities
- Set technical strategy and roadmaps for green iron, hydrogen and related platforms.
- Lead R&D portfolio with budgets, reviews and evidence-based decisions.
- Build strong scientific capability across laboratories and facilities.
- Form technical partnerships, joint ventures or licensing arrangements.
- Connect technology to customer and market needs with robust business cases.
- Guide technologies from pilot to deployment, ensuring cost and serviceability.
- Develop talent, present progress to executives, and foster disciplined innovation.
