Job summary

REA Group is seeking a Staff Security Engineer to lead detection engineering within our Detection & Response team. You’ll shape standards, define detection patterns across data flows, and drive automation and incident response in collaboration with Product, Platform and Engineering.

Based in Melbourne or Sydney with a flexible hybrid/remote stance, you will build scalable detections, mentor peers, and contribute to blue/purple team activities while applying attacker techniques to improve

Qualifications

• Ability to define detection engineering architectures, patterns and standards across multiple platforms.
• Strong understanding of cloud and application architectures with logging and monitoring
• Proficiency in log analysis, scripting and query languages to investigate security events
• Capability to configure and manage data pipelines and observability tooling
• Deep understanding of security observability tooling (EDR, SIEM, CNAPP, SOAR)
• Knowledge of attacker techniques (MITRE ATT&CK) and mapping to detections
• Experience with detection-as-code and CI/CD pipelines
• Ability to build automation workflows for security operations and runbooks

Responsibilities

• Identify, initiate and lead cross-team initiatives to strengthen detection and response capabilities.
• Configure and operate the detection platform, data flows, and alert enrichment.
• Define detection patterns to identify malicious activity and tune high-fidelity detections.
• Build and maintain automated pipelines, tests and quality gates for detections.
• Analyze security events and logs to identify malicious activity and emerging techniques.
• Evaluate threat intelligence and industry frameworks to set detection priorities.
• Investigate alerts and coordinate technical response activities with stakeholders.
• Produce automated response playbooks for rapid containment and response.
• Contribute to purple-team exercises and security testing.
• Ensure logging, monitoring and detection coverage for new systems and changes.
