Job description

DWS is seeking an experienced Solution Architect - Observability to support the development and execution of an Enterprise Observability Strategy and contribute to the observability architecture underpinning a major infrastructure simplification initiative.

This strategic architecture role will define current and target-state architecture, establish enterprise-wide observability standards and patterns, rationalise monitoring capabilities, and embed observability consistently across infrastructure, cloud, platform and application environments.

Prior professional experience working within a major banking environment is mandatory for this opportunity.

Where: Melbourne ideally

Type: ACN or Max Term

Start: 1 December

Length: 12 months

Style: Hybrid arrangements, 2-3 days onsite

Salary: Up to $900/day ACN or up to $210K (inc super) Max Term

Key responsibilities:
  • Define current-state and target-state enterprise observability architecture.
  • Develop observability principles, standards, reference architectures and reusable patterns.
  • Help shape and execute the organisation’s Enterprise Observability Strategy.
  • Embed observability into infrastructure, cloud, platform and application architecture.
  • Assess and rationalise existing monitoring and observability capabilities.
  • Establish consistent approaches across metrics, logs, traces, telemetry and alerting.
  • Support the adoption of SLIs, SLOs and broader SRE practices.
  • Design observability patterns across complex cloud, hybrid and on-premise environments.
  • Work closely with Enterprise Architecture, Infrastructure, Applications, SRE, Security and Engineering stakeholders.
  • Provide architectural guidance around observability tooling and integration while maintaining a vendor-agnostic enterprise architecture approach.
  • Contribute to observability technology roadmaps, governance and longer-term platform strategy.
Essential experience and skills:
  • Prior professional experience within a major banking environment is essential. Candidates without banking experience will not be suitable for this role.
  • Experience delivering architecture across enterprise infrastructure, platforms, SRE or observability within a large and complex banking environment.
  • Understanding of the governance, security, reliability, regulatory and architectural complexity associated with enterprise banking environments.
  • Enterprise-level Solution Architecture experience across complex technology estates.
  • Significant experience designing enterprise-scale observability and monitoring architectures, standards, architectural patterns and target-state designs.
  • Strong architectural and technical knowledge of Splunk, Dynatrace, OpenTelemetry or comparable enterprise monitoring, APM and telemetry platforms.
  • Understanding of how observability technologies fit within a broader enterprise architecture, rather than experience limited to tool administration.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud and hybrid infrastructure, containers, Kubernetes, enterprise networks, platform engineering, infrastructure architecture and cloud-native application environments.
  • Strong knowledge of metrics, logs, distributed tracing, telemetry, alerting, SLIs, SLOs, service reliability practices and SRE principles.
  • Ability to assess complex current-state environments and develop pragmatic target-state architecture, principles, standards, patterns and technology roadmaps.
  • Ability to balance strategic architecture with practical implementation and adoption.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to influence senior technical stakeholders across Enterprise Architecture, Infrastructure, Applications, SRE, Cyber Security and Engineering.
Highly desirable:
  • Experience with observability tool rationalisation, consolidation, migration and adoption strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of OpenTelemetry architecture and telemetry pipelines.
  • Experience designing cloud-native and platform engineering observability patterns.
  • Knowledge of AIOps, event management and AI-assisted operations.
  • Experience establishing observability governance, maturity models and control frameworks.
  • Commercial understanding of observability platforms, including licensing, telemetry consumption, cost optimisation and cost management.
