At Vix Technology, our products are delivered through the combined expertise of engineering teams around the world. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager in Melbourne to lead our existing teams and work closely with global colleagues to develop, improve and deliver the core products our public transit customers depend on.

You’ll connect people, priorities and technical decisions across locations, helping teams deliver customer commitments while moving our products forward. This is a role for someone who brings energy, sound engineering judgement and the ability to create clarity in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Bring teams together around shared outcomes

You’ll manage and develop our Melbourne engineering teams, building on their experience and giving them clear direction. Working with engineering leaders, technical specialists, Product Managers and Project Managers globally, you’ll align plans, manage dependencies and ensure everyone understands how their contribution fits into the wider product.

You’ll help turn shared priorities into achievable commitments, coordinating work across teams and time zones. Clear communication, thoughtful handovers and timely decisions will be central to your approach, particularly where delivery depends on contributions from several locations.

Your oversight will span planning and estimation through development, testing, release and post-deployment support. You’ll keep progress and risks visible, resolve blockers and bring the right people together when an issue needs a collective decision.

Deliver for customers while developing our products

Your teams will contribute to core Vix products used by public transit operators. You’ll help engineers understand the customer need behind their work and how their decisions affect reliability, usability and the wider solution.

Working with global Product and Delivery colleagues, you’ll balance customer implementation requirements with ongoing product development. You’ll encourage reusable capabilities and consistent approaches, helping teams build improvements that benefit the product beyond a single deployment.

You’ll also ensure maintenance, technical debt and operational improvements receive appropriate attention alongside new functionality. When priorities compete, you’ll explain the trade-offs and agree a practical path forward with the people involved.

Raise engineering standards across boundaries

You’ll work with technical leads and engineering peers to strengthen code quality, design practices, automated testing and operational readiness. The aim is to give teams a consistent foundation for delivering reliable software, wherever that work takes place.

You’ll identify opportunities to improve automation, make releases more predictive and reduce recurring issues. When problems arise, you’ll support investigation across team boundaries, ensuring findings lead to clear actions and shared learning.

Alongside the Head of Engineering and other engineering leaders, you’ll contribute to wider standards and improvement initiatives. You’ll use meaningful measures of quality, reliability and delivery to understand what is working and where support is needed.

Develop people and build strong connections

You’ll provide regular coaching, feedback and career development support to your direct reports, setting clear expectations and helping engineers grow their capabilities. You’ll build an environment where people take ownership, share knowledge and feel comfortable raising concerns early.

You’ll also help your teams build productive relationships with colleagues internationally. That means understanding different perspectives, agreeing responsibilities and creating ways of working that respect both shared delivery goals and local needs.

As priorities evolve, you’ll contribute to workforce planning, recruitment and onboarding, ensuring your teams have the skills and capacity to fulfil their role within the global engineering organisation.

About You

You’ll have experience managing established software engineering teams and delivering customer-facing products through collaboration across locations. You’ll combine people leadership with the technical understanding to assess options, challenge assumptions and guide sound decisions.

We’re Particularly Interested In

• Experience leading and developing engineers, including coaching, performance management and career progression.
• A track record of coordinating delivery with distributed or international teams, managing dependencies and shared commitments.
• Strong engineering judgement and experience improving software quality, testing, automation and release practices.
• The ability to balance customer requirements, product priorities and technical improvements while building effective relationships across functions.

Experience in public transit, ticketing, payments or another operationally demanding environment would be valuable. You’ll bring curiosity about our products, respect for the expertise within our teams and the initiative to move work forward.
