Job summary

Skyborne Technologies Pty. is seeking a Software Engineer to join our Brisbane office, developing C++ software for mission critical guidance and weapon systems within a Defence Tech context.

You will work under the Software Lead, contribute to automated testing, CI pipelines, and hardware-in-the-loop testing, and travel for field demonstrations as required. Australian citizenship and ability to obtain DEFENCE clearances are mandatory.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or Mechatronics.
• Minimum 3+ years in a software development team environment with C/C++.
• Commercial experience with real-time operating systems.
• Commercial experience with MQTT, TLS and QUIC.
• Exposure to NVIDIA Jetson platforms and integrating AI and computer vision.
• Able to receive and implement constructive code feedback.
• Australian Citizen and willing to obtain Defence security clearance.
• Willingness to obtain Queensland Firearms Licence.

Skyborne Technologies is a Defence Tech company working in the Robotics, Autonomous Systems and AI Defence industry, developing innovative robotics. The company is based in Brisbane, Australia.

Skyborne is growing within the Defence and security space to develop and produce robots, both armed and unarmed. The company's main lines of effort are the Cerberus tri-copter platform, the CODiAQ quadruped UGV and unmanned weapon systems.

About the Team

Skyborne's Research & Development team have various contracts to deliver in the short to medium term. The candidate will be placed to support the delivery of these important contracts and aid in company growth. The successful candidate will join our team at our office located in Brisbane.

About the role

Under the supervision of the Software Lead, the successful applicant will undertake software design and development activities as part of the software team. The role will allow autonomy and leading of high-level engineering tasks.

As a Software Engineer you can anticipate some of your day-to-day tasks to include:

• Designing and developing software in modern C++ for mission critical guidance, targeting and weapon systems
• Implementing software to conform to company software best practices and industry standards
• Contribute to automated testing frameworks and CI pipelines
• Software-in-the-loop, Hardware-in-the-loop, and field testing of Skyborne platforms
• Participating in code reviews
• Perform tasks within allocated timeframes
• Local, interstate, and international travel to support field testing and customer demonstrations

The ideal experience and skillset best suited to this role include:

• Bachelor's degree in one of the following: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering
• Minimum 3+ years industry experience in a software development team environment, with proven experience in C/C++
• Commercial experience with real-time operating systems
• Commercial experience with MQTT, TSL and QUIC
• Exposure to NVIDIA Jetson platforms and integrating AI and computer vision technologies
• Ability to receive constructive feedback on code and implement accordingly
• Applicants must be an Australian Citizen to meet Defence security requirements
• Eligibility and willingness to obtain an Australian Department of Defence security clearance
• Eligibility and willingness to obtain a QLD Firearms License

It would be desirable, but not essential, if you have proven experience in any of:

• Software Safety Standards such as DO-178C and MIL-STD-882E
• UI/UX design with Qt5 and Qt6
• Developing drivers in C/C++ for embedded sensors across various interfaces, such as SPI, I2C, UART, CAN

The preferred candidate may be required to complete Skyborne background checks in line with AS 4811-2022 including pre-employment verification and national police checks.
