Job description

Service Support Officers, QLD/NSW State Operations

Australian Electoral Commission – Hervey Bay QLD

The AEC has a dispersed network of 150 electoral divisions. These positions are based in our offices in Maryborough/Hervey Bay, Toowoomba and Robina. As part of a national network of Service Support Officers, you will undertake a range of administrative and operational activities that support electoral roll maintenance and the delivery of electoral events.

The team you will be part of typically consists of 3 employees; however, staffing levels increase significantly during electoral events as we engage a temporary workforce. This provides opportunities to work with people from diverse backgrounds and contribute to election-specific projects delivered in a fast-paced environment with tight timeframes, increased public scrutiny and multiple interdependent priorities.

The Opportunities

This is an exciting opportunity to join the AEC and contribute to work that has a direct impact on Australia's democratic processes.

AEC Queensland is seeking multiple Service Support Officers to help maintain the integrity of the Australian electoral roll and support the delivery of electoral services. In this role, you will assist in supervising APS 1 employees, provide customer-focused services when required, and work closely with Project Officers and Service Officers while reporting to an APS 6 Team Leader.

The Service Support Officer role is part-time; however, full-time work will likely be required during peak workload periods.

This role involves undertaking basic to moderately complex work under general direction. The role contributes to enrolment administration and supports a range of projects throughout the electoral cycle, responding to changing operational priorities as required.

During federal election events, workforce responsibilities increase significantly. Service Support Officers assist with the supervision of the Temporary Election Workforce (TEW), support the implementation of operational delivery plans and contribute to the effective operation of their nominated Outposted Centre (OPC) under the direction of a Divisional Returning Officer (DRO).

To excel you’ll have:

We are seeking motivated and capable professionals who can demonstrate the skills, knowledge and experience required to perform successfully in these roles, including:

  • Demonstrated resilience, adaptability and initiative when working in changing operational environments, including the ability to remain positive and respond effectively to evolving priorities.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, collaborate effectively and build productive working relationships with team members and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working collaboratively as part of a team, contributing to shared goals and supporting positive workplace outcomes.
  • The ability to act with integrity, take responsibility for your work and make appropriate decisions within established procedures and guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for the accurate completion of work, manage competing tasks and seek guidance when required.
  • Ability to deliver quality customer service and project outcomes within agreed timeframes, priorities and policy frameworks.
  • Experience in identifying potential issues that may affect the delivery of work, escalating concerns appropriately and contributing ideas to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently when required, including managing priorities and maintaining productivity while working remotely from direct supervision.
  • General computer skills, including working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite.
  • AEC employees must be Australian citizens.
  • Any person who is, and seen to be active in political affairs, and intends to publicly carry on this activity, may compromise the strict neutrality of the AEC and cannot be considered.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain a character clearance.
  • Applicants are required to consent to, undergo, obtain and maintain the security clearance required for this role.
