Job description

Team Leaders, Queensland State Operations

Australian Electoral Commission - Toowoomba QLD

Working at the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) means contributing to the delivery and integrity of Australia’s democratic processes. In this role, you will help deliver outcomes that uphold electoral integrity and maintain public trust in Australia’s electoral system.

The AEC is an independent statutory authority responsible for delivering federal elections, by-elections and referendums, and for maintaining the electoral roll. Our work is central to Australia’s democracy and includes large-scale, high-profile operations conducted under significant public scrutiny.

Between electoral events, the AEC undertakes a broad range of activities including electoral roll management, industrial elections, electoral boundary redistributions, and the administration of political funding and disclosure schemes.

Our work is guided by our values of Quality, Agility and Professionalism, which underpin how we operate and enable us to deliver trusted outcomes for all Australians.

What we offer at the AEC

At the AEC, we support our people to perform at their best while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. We offer a supportive, inclusive workplace and a range of benefits, including:

  • Flexible working arrangements
  • A collaborative and inclusive workplace culture
  • Career development and learning opportunities
  • Study assistance and professional development support
  • Career pathways across a national organisation
  • Competitive salary and conditions, including 15.4% superannuation
  • Purchased leave options (Ongoing employees only)
  • Paid Christmas and New Year shutdown
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for employees and their families

We are committed to building a workforce that reflects the diversity of the Australian community and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds.
Reasonable adjustments are available throughout the recruitment process and during employment.

About the Team

The AEC has a dispersed network of 150 electoral divisions, 30 of which are located across Queensland.

Team Leader positions are available in Toowoomba, Townsville, North Lakes. You will be one of a network of Team Leaders/Senior Project Leads across the country, responsible for managing your work unit to ensure the proper conduct of our federal elections and referendums. You will work closely with our State Office, National Office and the other States and Territories.

Each APS 6 Team Leader will typically oversee a team of around 2-10 staff. However, team size increases significantly during an election event as we scale up and engage our temporary election workforce. During the delivery of the election, the Team Leader will likely undertake the legislative responsibilities of the Divisional Returning Officer for a federal electoral division and will work to ensure that the division delivers an election result with transparency and integrity.

For the delivery of a federal election or local by-elections, staffing levels expand rapidly to help manage the increased workload around risk management, fast-moving project work and logistical activities, media and public scrutiny.

At the AEC, you will develop strong connections with colleagues and supportive networks, as we all work to deliver an impartial and independent electoral system with high integrity.

The Opportunities

The Queensland State Operations team is seeking to engage multiple Team Leaders to support election delivery. This is an exciting opportunity to join the AEC and contribute to work that has a direct impact on Australia’s democratic processes.

We are looking for agile, energetic, self-motivated, results-driven and experienced Team Leaders to lead a team of staff to manage divisional election planning, delivery, and evaluation. The AEC is seeking proactive Team Leaders who can work under pressure to deliver high-quality outcomes within tight timeframes, both independently and as part of a team, while operating with limited guidance.

During the preparation phase of the electoral cycle, you will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the electoral roll within your division and leading your team in preparation for the next federal electoral event.

You will contribute to the development of team objectives for both short-term tasks and longer-term strategic initiatives. This includes setting priorities for the work area, maintaining team cohesion, and ensuring the quality of team outputs.

You will be responsible for the overall supervision of your divisional office team, as well as temporary election staff. Using your leadership skills, you will support the rapid expansion of the workforce and ensure operational requirements are delivered seamlessly and efficiently. You will join a leadership team committed to learning and continuous development and will play a key role in building technical capability and fostering career growth within your team.

To excel you’ll have:

We are seeking a motivated and capable professional who can demonstrate the skills, knowledge and experience required to perform successfully in this role.

Proven experience leading the planning and delivery of events, including managing logistics, resources and competing priorities.

Strong Leadership experience building staff capability and developing positive working relationships with staff, contractors and stakeholders.

Demonstrated experience managing compliance, WHS requirements and operational risks, and applying legislation, policies and procedures to deliver safe and compliant events.

Demonstrated experience leading projects, implementing improvements or driving change to enhance event operations and business outcomes.

Demonstrated sound judgement and decision-making skills, including the ability to solve problems and respond to operational issues.

Ability to work autonomously and a strong commitment to working harmoniously within a dispersed team to achieve positive results and support the AEC’s strategic direction.
