Job description

Our client is a successful international importer and distributor partnering with leading Australian retailers, online retailers and marketplaces. Operating through a B2B dropship model, the business supports a fast-paced, operationally demanding environment.

The business is seeking a technically strong Senior Systems & Technology Engineer to take ownership of its day‑to‑day IT environment, supporting approx 100 users across office, warehouse and remote locations. Reporting to the MD and CFO, you will work as part of a small, two-person internal IT team in a broad, autonomous, hands‑on role across Microsoft 365, Azure, Intune, Windows Server, networking, infrastructure and cybersecurity. As a a self-driven, hands‑on problem‑solver, you will independently investigate complex technical issues, identify root causes and implement effective, lasting solutions by resolving technical challenges firsthand rather than relying others to do the technical work.

About the role

This is a genuine hands‑on engineering role, (no managerial responsibilities) involving troubleshooting and maintenance to improve the business technology environment. You will support office, warehouse and remote users, assess technical risks and business impact, retaining outcome ownership including;

Microsoft 365 & Cloud: Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID, SharePoint, user accounts, permissions, authentication and access policies.

Endpoints & Infrastructure: Intune, MDM, endpoint security, Windows Server, virtualisation, patching and device management.

Networking & Connectivity: LAN/WAN, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, Wi‑Fi, firewalls and multi‑site connectivity.

Security & Business Continuity: Cybersecurity, backup monitoring, restore testing, disaster recovery and access controls.

Troubleshooting & Improvement: Diagnose complex incidents, identify root causes, implement and verify solutions, document findings and improve reliability through automation and better processes.

About you

You are an analytical, resourceful problem‑solver who enjoys getting into the technical detail and understanding the ‘why’ of issues. You are an independent specialist, investigate unfamiliar issues methodically, evaluate alternative solutions and make sound decisions based on technical effectiveness, security, cost and business impact. You take ownership from initial investigation through to confirmed resolution, preferring to work with technology over managing people, a desire to continue developing technically while having genuine ownership and influence over the IT environment.

Ideally, you will have;

Minimum five years of current or recent hands‑on technical experience in systems engineering, infrastructure engineering, cloud engineering, senior technical support or a similar role

Strong practical experience with Microsoft 365, Azure, Entra ID and SharePoint

Hands‑on Intune, MDM and endpoint management experience

Windows Server, virtualisation and infrastructure administration

Strong networking knowledge, including DNS, DHCP, VPNs, Wi‑Fi and firewalls

Practical experience with backups, disaster recovery and cybersecurity

Proven ability to independently troubleshoot complex issues, analyse multiple solutions and recommend the best solution

Hands‑on experience in an MSP, SME, multi‑site & fast‑paced business environment

Clear communication with the ability to explain technical issues and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders.

Practical troubleshooting is essential...

Your structured thinking and practical capabilities will be assessed relating to your diagnostic process, use of tools and logs, root cause isolation, solutions and outcomes including;

  • Intune devices failing to enrol or receive policies
  • Warehouse issues involving Intermittent network or DNS issues
  • Windows Server or virtual machine performance problems
  • Backups reporting success but failing restoration tests
  • Security or Conditional Access policies disrupting business operations

Highly regarded experience includes: MSP Level 3 or senior escalation experience, Microsoft certifications, PowerShell and automation skills, assessing AI adoption, and experience in warehouse, logistics, retail, FMCG or distribution environments.

If you are an engineer who is currently hands‑on and wants to stay technically involved, if you enjoy solving difficult technical problems, taking ownership and making technology work reliably, we'd love to hear from you. *This position is unlikely to suit candidates with experience/ preference for staff supervision, departmental management, project coordination or vendor oversight.
