Job summary

Downer is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer based in Melbourne to lead the design, analysis, verification and construction support of steel and concrete structures across major power infrastructure projects.

You will work with civil, geotechnical, primary, secondary and construction teams to manage structural deliverables from feasibility through to commissioning, providing expert advice and guiding designers and subcontractors.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in power industry project delivery, substation/transmission design.
• Experience with structural steel, reinforced concrete and foundations.
• Ability to interpret geotechnical reports and select suitable foundations.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review calculations, reports, specs, scopes, bills, drawings and 3D outputs.
• Coordinate structural interfaces with civil, geotechnical, primary, secondary and construction teams.
• Manage design packages to meet schedule, budget, quality and client requirements.
• Participate in design reviews, multidisciplinary workshops and risk assessments.
• Undertake site inspections and provide engineering support during construction and commissioning.
• Conduct design checks and peer reviews and embed lessons learned.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to be based in Melbourne and to lead the design, analysis, verification and construction support of steel and concrete structures across major power infrastructure projects. Working closely with civil, geotechnical, primary, secondary and construction teams, you will manage structural deliverables from feasibility and tender through detailed design, construction and commissioning.
This is a hands-on technical role with the opportunity to provide expert advice, guide designers and subcontractors, support site activities and contribute to design reviews, Safety in Design workshops and value engineering initiatives.

• Prepare and review calculations, engineering reports, specifications, scopes of work, bills of quantities, drawings and 3D model outputs.
• Coordinate structural interfaces with civil, geotechnical, primary, secondary and construction disciplines.
• Manage design packages to meet project schedule, budget, quality and client requirements.
• Participate in design reviews, multidisciplinary workshops, Safety in Design activities and risk assessments.
• Undertake site inspections and condition assessments, and provide engineering support during construction and commissioning.
• Conduct design checks and peer reviews, maintain QA requirements and embed lessons learned into future projects.

What we are looking for

• 10+ years of project delivery experience in the power industry, including substation and transmission structural design
• Demonstrated capability in structural steel, reinforced concrete and foundation design
• Strong knowledge of geotechnical report interpretation, foundation selection, substation structures, transformer compounds and oil containment systems
• Experience using structural analysis software such as SpaceGASS, STAAD or equivalent, with exposure to CAD platforms including MicroStation and AutoCAD
• A thorough, detail-focused approach and a strong commitment to Zero Harm, quality and fit-for-purpose engineering
