Job summary

Downer is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer - HV Substation Secondary Systems to lead detailed designs, calculations and documentation for complex substation projects in Australia.

Based in Adelaide or other major hubs, you will mentor engineers, ensure safety, quality and compliance, and deliver complete design packages supported by CAD tools and power system software. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams and uphold safe work practices.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering.
• Extensive experience in HV substation secondary systems design.
• Knowledge of HV substation protection schemes, relays, automation and control.
• Basic knowledge of power system design including primary plant components (transformers, circuit breakers, CTs, VTs, CVTs, reactors, capacitor banks).
• Experience developing SLDs, protection & control schematics, layouts and cable schedules.
• Proficiency with CAD tools (MicroStation, AutoCAD) and software (PowerFactory, PSCAD).
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer - HV Substation Secondary Systems to join our Energy & Utilities team. In this role, you will lead the delivery of high-quality engineering designs across complex substation projects. You will work within a multidisciplinary team, providing technical expertise and contributing to innovative, safe, and compliant engineering solutions. As part of this role, you will:

• Deliver detailed secondary system designs in accordance with client, Australian, and international standards
• Produce design drawings, calculations, reports, and technical documentation
• Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentoring to engineers
• Support the delivery of safe, efficient, and cost-effective project outcomes

This is a full-time permanent role and can be based in Underdale (SA), Milton (QLD), or Melbourne (VIC) for the right candidate.

What We Are Looking For

You are a collaborative and technically strong engineer with a commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement. Key requirements include:

• Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering
• Extensive experience in HV substation secondary systems design
• Strong knowledge of HV substation protection schemes relays, substation automation and control systems, AC and DC auxiliary systems
• Basic knowledge of power system design including primary plant such as, transformers, circuit breakers, CTs, VTs, CVTs reactors, capacitor banks and filter banks
• Experience developing Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), protection & control schematics and logic diagrams, panel layouts and cable schedules, and control building layouts
• Proven ability to deliver complete engineering design packages and manage documentation
• Proficiency with CAD tools such as MicroStation and AutoCAD and engineering software (e.g. PowerFactory, PSCAD)
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail

You will also bring a strong understanding of quality assurance processes and a proactive approach to safe work practices.
