BHP's Olympic Dam operation in South Australia seeks a Senior Specialist Structural Engineer to maintain integrity of critical assets and lead defect management of concrete and steel structures. You will apply engineering judgement, review drawings, and support safe, reliable operations across the site.

You will review inspection data, conduct field assessments, prepare technical reports and collaborate with maintenance and operations to translate findings into effective actions.

Qualifications

• Chartered Structural Engineer status recognised by Engineers Australia.
• Strong experience in structural and civil engineering, including concrete/steel inspections.
• Knowledge of structural design, commissioning, maintenance and operations.
• Ability to interpret structural drawings and technical documentation.
• Excellent written communication and defect reporting.

We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Specialist Structural Engineer, reporting to the Superintendent Major Maintenance.

The Challenge Ahead

As a Senior Specialist Structural Engineer, you will play a key role in maintaining the structural integrity, safety and reliability of critical assets across Olympic Dam. Working within a team responsible for strategic inspection, maintenance and defect management of concrete and steel structures, you will provide technical expertise that supports safe and efficient site operations.

This is a highly visible technical role where you will apply your engineering judgement to assess structural condition, identify risks, prioritise remediation activities and support long‑term asset performance. You will work closely with maintenance, operations and engineering teams to ensure inspection findings translate into practical and effective outcomes.

Whether reviewing structural drawings, evaluating inspection data or conducting field‑based assessments, you will have the opportunity to influence decisions that contribute to the safe operation of one of Australia's most significant mining and processing operations.

What You'll Bring to the Role

You are a safety‑focused structural engineering professional who enjoys solving complex asset integrity challenges in an operational environment. You combine strong technical capability with the ability to work independently, build trusted relationships and deliver practical outcomes.

To be successful, you will bring:

• Chartered Structural Engineer status recognised by Engineers Australia.
• Strong experience in structural and civil engineering, including the inspection and assessment of concrete and steel structures.
• Demonstrated knowledge across structural design, commissioning, maintenance and operational environments.
• The ability to assess defects, evaluate risk and develop practical repair recommendations.
• Experience interpreting structural drawings and technical documentation.
• Strong written communication skills, including inspection reporting and technical documentation.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, with exposure to asset management and maintenance management systems viewed favourably.
• A proactive approach to safety, risk management and continuous improvement.
• The confidence to lead by example, coach others and contribute positively to a strong safety culture.
• Promote and demonstrate an unwavering commitment to health, safety, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
• Review inspection records, asset history and maintenance information to support informed engineering decisions.
• Conduct field inspections of concrete and steel structures across the Olympic Dam operation.
• Identify, assess and classify structural defects and asset condition issues.
• Prepare technical reports, document inspection outcomes and maintain defect records in accordance with site standards.
• Review and approve maintenance scopes and repair recommendations within your area of expertise.
• Assign risk rankings and priorities to defects to support effective asset management and work planning.
• Review as-built structural drawings and technical documentation.
• Support maintenance work management processes, including defect creation, prioritisation and ongoing tracking.
• Participate in problem‑solving activities, continuous improvement initiatives and operational excellence routines.
• Identify and report workplace hazards and contribute to a culture of proactive risk management.
• Undertake field leadership activities that reinforce safe behaviours and support the wellbeing of our people.

Work Location

This opportunity is based at Olympic Dam in South Australia and can be offered as either:

• FIFO ex‑Adelaide on a 5/2, 4/3 roster, or
• Residential at Olympic Dam on 5/2 roster.
