Job summary

ELMO Software in Sydney seeks a hands-on software engineer to build modern web applications using PHP and React, with emphasis on solid design, testing, and maintainability. Qualifications

• Proficient in PHP and React development.
• Strong grounding in software engineering fundamentals (SOLID, REST, OOP).
• Ability to produce maintainable, well-tested code.
• Experience debugging and production investigation.
• Experience with AI coding tools is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Championing Code Quality & Standards: Set the benchmark for excellence by advising the team on standards and proactively identifying gaps in project requirements to ensure high-quality delivery.
• Driving Security & Architecture: Lead threat modeling efforts, mentor team members on secure coding practices, and architect services that align with our core principles, all while promoting security through thorough PR and architecture reviews.
• Leading AI-Assisted Delivery: Orchestrate multi-agent workflows to build complex features and contribute to our expanding prompt library. You will be responsible for catching nuanced performance or architectural issues in AI-generated code.
• Translating Business Intent: Bridge the gap between business needs and technical execution by codifying specifications across epics and collaborating with Product Owners to resolve ambiguity before development begins.
• Ensuring Robust Validation: Go beyond basic testing; review AI-generated test suites to ensure they capture full business logic and mentor the team through security findings.
• Owning Delivery & Incidents: Guide the team through project breakdown and estimation, while serving as the primary owner for production issues, seeing them through to resolution with a focus on stability.

Desired Skills and Experience:

• Hands-on experience with PHP, React and modern web application development.
• Solid grounding in software engineering fundamentals, including SOLID, REST, OOP and secure coding practices.
• Ability to produce maintainable, well-tested and well-documented code.
• Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including log analysis and production investigation.
• Confidence using AI coding tools effectively, including effective prompt writing and critical review of generated output.
• Nice to have:
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code or Codex.
• Familiarity with GraphQL.
