Job summary

L3Harris Australia is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to contribute to mission-critical defence systems. You will own large software architecture areas, develop in Python, C++, TypeScript/JavaScript, and guide project schedules for diverse stakeholders.

Requirements include a software engineering degree, Commonwealth security clearance, 7+ years’ experience, and strong design/verification discipline. Brisbane/Eight Mile Plains with flexible hours and a strong benefits package.

Qualifications

• Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar.
• Active Commonwealth Security clearance.
• 7+ years' experience in a similar role.
• Experience architecting complex software, adhering to requirements, with a structured verification approach.
• Proven experience as a Software Engineer with a comprehensive project portfolio.
• Hands-on experience with unit/integration testing, documentation, API design and development.
• Familiarity with Python; C++ and TypeScript/JavaScript.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a multi-disciplinary team, adhering to development processes.

Responsibilities

• Take responsibility for large and complex areas of the software architecture for multiple software systems.
• Ownership of software development schedule and reporting to project/customer stakeholders.
• Develop modular, readable and robust code for defence systems adhering to security and functional requirements in Python, JavaScript, Typescript/React and C++.
• Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, systems design, agile development, review, test-driven development, integration, and verification.
• Present design details during customer reviews to a mix of participants with and without software engineering knowledge.
• Collaborate effectively with both software and other engineering disciplines as well as management, to ensure comprehensive coverage of requirements as efficiently as possible.
• Mentor less experienced software engineers in best practice techniques for development and debugging
• Write and maintain both internal and deliverable documentation, either directly or through supervision of contractors.
• Provide Engineering support to manufacturing as required.
• Participate in demo activities for the purpose of sharing knowledge.

About the role

What you’ll bring

The role requires the following experience and skills:

• Degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or similar.
• An active Commonwealth Security clearance
• 7+ years' experience in similar role.
• Experience architecting complex software, adhering to requirements, with a structured verification approach.
• Proven experience as a Software Engineer with a comprehensive project portfolio.

Desirable Requirements

• Experience in working on defence projects
• Comfortable with Source Control and CI/CD systems.
• Experience working in Agile environments (Scrum/Kanban)
• Background or strong understanding in UI/UX design and principles.
• Exposure to or hands-on experience with DevOps practices and toolchains.
• Experience with containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Ability to read, interoperate, and understand lower-level firmware running on embedded systems
