Job summary

L3Harris Technologies Australia is seeking a Systems Engineer to conduct activities across the full system lifecycle for complex defence capability projects. You will ensure solutions are coherent, verifiable and aligned to requirements, reporting to the Systems Engineering Manager.

The role requires a degree in electronic/electrical engineering, 4+ years in systems engineering, and an NV1 defence clearance (or willingness to obtain). Experience with defence programs and MBSE is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Apply systems engineering processes across the lifecycle to deliver outcomes.

  • Engage in internal reviews and management of risks, issues, and changes.
  • Coordinate with safety, security, EMI/EMC, DoDAF/MOSA/SOSA where applicable.
  • Support defence accreditation, compliance, and acceptance activities.

About The Role

We are currently seeking a Systems Engineer for conducting systems engineering activities across the full system lifecycle for complex Defence capability projects. The role ensures technical solutions are coherent, verifiable, compliant, and aligned to customer and operational requirements. This is achieved through participation in all phases of the systems engineering lifecycle including requirements management, architecture development, design, implementation, integration, verification & validation, risk and change management. You will join a team of 4 other system engineers reporting to our Systems Engineering Manager.

What The Role Will Involve

Key responsibilities include:

  • Work in a multi-disciplinary team with primary responsibility for the application of systems engineering processes in accordance with organisational procedures and recognised standards to ensure timely and professional delivery of project outcomes.
  • Perform requirements analysis, decomposition, allocation, traceability, verification planning, and compliance management.
  • Establish and maintain the technical baseline system, including requirements, architecture, interfaces, design decisions, assumptions, risks, and verification evidence.
  • Develop, review, and maintain key systems engineering artefacts, including specifications, architecture & descriptions, interface control documents, verification artefacts, trade studies, technical reports, and systems engineering plans.
  • Engage in system architecture and interface management activities to ensure the solution is technically coherent, feasible, secure, supportable, and aligned with operational needs.
  • Support engineering decisions through structured trade studies, technical analysis, option assessment, and evidence-based recommendations.
  • Contribute to systems engineering estimates, schedules, scope definition, resource planning, and technical delivery planning.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of verification and validation strategies, plans, procedures, matrices, and evidence to demonstrate compliance with applicable requirements.
  • Support integration, test readiness, verification execution, defect resolution, and customer acceptance activities.
  • Support internal and customer technical reviews, including requirements, design, test readiness, production readiness, verification, and acceptance reviews.
  • Support management of technical risks, issues, assumptions, dependencies, opportunities, and engineering change impacts.
  • Support configuration management and engineering change control to ensure the approved technical baseline is maintained.
  • Coordinate with specialty engineering disciplines, including safety, security, cyberworthiness, ILS, reliability, maintainability, human factors, EMI/EMC, and environmental qualification.
  • Support Defence technical assurance, certification, compliance, and acceptance activities, including preparation of objective quality evidence
  • Participate in internal engineering and quality processes, including non-conformance reports, failure reports, corrective actions, investigations, lessons learned, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, stakeholders, and internal teams, including presenting engineering artefacts and technical recommendations.
  • Contribute to systems engineering capability development, including improvement of processes, templates, tools, methods, and standards.
  • Support adherence to company Quality processes and procedures, including those required for AS9100 accreditation.
What You’ll Bring

The role requires the following experience and skills:

  • Degree in electronic/electrical engineering or similar discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in a System Engineering role.
  • Current Defence security clearance (NV1 or willing to obtain)
  • Experience with Defence acquisition programs.
  • Demonstrated experience applying systems engineering principles across the system lifecycle.
  • Experience with requirements management and/or systems engineering tools.
  • Understanding of engineering change control, configuration management, technical risk management, and technical decision-making processes.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to engineering, management, supplier, and customer stakeholders.
Desirable
  • Post-graduate qualifications in Systems Engineering.
  • Knowledge of model-based systems engineering (MBSE).
  • Knowledge of systems architecture frameworks such as DoDAF and standards such as MOSA/SOSA.
