Job summary

Optus is seeking a senior Internet Network Engineer to lead the design and evolution of its Internet routing infrastructure. You will translate architecture into scalable, resilient network solutions, and mentor engineers while managing technical risks across projects and vendors.

The role requires 7+ years in large-scale Internet networking, deep routing expertise (BGP, OSPF/IS-IS, MPLS, SRv6), and hands-on Cisco/Juniper experience. A hybrid work setup is supported.

Qualifications

• Degree in Telecommunications Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience.
• 7+ years' experience in service-provider, hyperscale or large-scale Internet network engineering, with senior IP or Internet design responsibilities.
• Deep practical expertise in Internet routing: BGP/MP-BGP, routing policy, OSPF, IS-IS, MPLS, SRv6, traffic engineering and resilience.
• Hands-on experience with Cisco and/or Juniper service-provider routing platforms (design, config, testing, troubleshooting).
• Experience designing scalable Internet networks: peering, transit, content connectivity, capacity planning, routing security.
• Experience with network automation, telemetry and observability: Python, Ansible, streaming telemetry, NetFlow/IPFIX.
• Strong ability to translate architecture and service requirements into detailed designs and operational handover.
• Cisco/Juniper certifications and knowledge of DDoS, DNS/Anycast, SDN and optical transport technologies are advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Lead the detailed design and evolution of Optus' Internet routing infrastructure, translating architecture and service requirements into scalable, resilient and operationally supportable network solutions.
• Act as the technical lead and SME for complex routing initiatives, topology design and multivendor engineering challenges.
• Develop high-quality engineering deliverables including designs, configurations, test plans, implementation and rollback procedures, and handover docs.
• Lead lab testing, solution validation and production implementation, resolving issues and ensuring deployment readiness.
• Drive network automation, telemetry and observability to improve repeatability, visibility and operational effectiveness.
• Provide technical assurance and leadership across the engineering lifecycle, mentoring engineers and communicating risks to stakeholders.
