Job summary

Hitachi Rail is seeking a Senior Hardware Design Engineer for our Sydney, Australia-based team. The role focuses on delivering coordinated hardware design with clear interfaces, installation requirements, and compliance across the programme.

You will lead the hardware design of physical components, ensuring continuity of approach, and alignment with subsystem inputs. The position requires strong experience in rail environments and documented installation-ready designs.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in hardware design within rail or comparable infrastructure environments.
• Strong knowledge of cabling systems, rack layouts, equipment installation, and power distribution.
• Working understanding of earthing, bonding, and EMI/EMC principles as applied to physical design.
• Experience producing structured, installation-ready engineering design documentation.
• Ability to translate multi-discipline subsystem requirements into coherent hardware designs.

Responsibilities

• Develop rack layouts and equipment configurations with space allocation and maintainability in mind.
• Define cable routing approaches across stations, trackside, tunnel, depot, and facilities.
• Design fibre and copper terminations with clear physical interface requirements.
• Establish power supply requirements including load allocation and distribution.
• Incorporate thermal/heat load constraints into hardware configurations.
• Design earthing and bonding arrangements per project requirements.
• Apply EMI/EMC principles to physical design, including segregation and routing.
• Define equipment mounting solutions (racks, desks, walls, video walls).
• Specify cable containment and installation constraints where applicable.
