Job summary

Finisar Australia is seeking a Process Development Engineer to drive the development of assembly processes for new products (NPI) and optimise processes for existing product lines in a precision, high-technology manufacturing environment.

You will develop and validate processes, document specifications, train operators, monitor SPC, and contribute to design for manufacture and cost-reduction initiatives across global facilities.

Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science with understanding of manufacturing concepts and tolerances.
• Experience as a process or manufacturing engineer in a high-technology manufacturing environment.
• Minimum 5 years developing or designing processes/equipment for electro-mechanical or mechanical assemblies.
• Solid knowledge of materials used in precision assemblies and associated testing methods.
• SPC, FMEA, and reliability standards knowledge.
• Hands-on experience in failure analysis techniques; SEM and XRD desirable.

Responsibilities

• Develop and enhance assembly processes for both new and existing products.
• Create, release, and maintain process documentation including specifications and work instructions.
• Specify and execute validation testing for new assembly processes.
• Train operators and technicians on new and updated processes.
• Establish and monitor process metrics (SPC) to track yield and failure modes in pilot production.
• Contribute to new product line design with a strong focus on Design for Manufacture (DFM).
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce manufacturing cost, increase process efficiency, and enhance product quality across all assembly lines.
• Support the transfer of new assembly processes to overseas production facilities.
• Develop and transfer assembly processes for customised product variants.
• Conduct regular audits of production processes, staff, and equipment.
• Ensure all manufacturing equipment and materials handling comply with OH&S standards.

• Experience as a process or manufacturing engineer, ideally within a high‑technology manufacturing environment
• Minimum 5 years developing or designing processes/equipment for electro‑mechanical or mechanical assemblies
• Strong understanding of materials used in precision assemblies (low‑thermal‑expansion adhesives, metals, ceramics) and associated testing methods (tensile, shear, etc.)
• Solid knowledge of SPC, FMEA, and reliability standards
• Hands‑on experience in failure analysis techniques (cross‑sectioning, inspection); SEM and XRD experience highly desirable
