Job summary

Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute – Sydney CBD NSW is seeking a detail-focused Senior/Payroll Officer for permanent part-time work (22.8-30.4 hrs/wk). Onsite in Darlinghurst, Sydney, NSW, reporting to the Finance Manager.

You will manage end-to-end payroll processing, ensuring accuracy and compliance for Australian payroll, including leave, superannuation, taxation and related payments, while maintaining confidential employee records and delivering timely payroll support.

Responsibilities

• End-to-end payroll processing for fortnightly, monthly and ad hoc runs.
• Calculate salaries, allowances, loadings, overtime, deductions, and leave payments.
• Maintain accurate payroll records including salary, taxation, and superannuation.
• Manage leave balances and various leave types.
• Prepare payroll reports, variance checks, journals and reconciliations.
• Support PAYG withholding, SG, STP and related compliance.
• Respond to payroll enquiries timely and confidentially.
• Collaborate with Finance and People & Culture on onboarding, offboarding, reporting and audits.

Senior/Payroll Officer

The role

Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Payroll Officer is responsible for the accurate, timely and compliant processing of payroll and related employee payments. You will manage payroll administration from end to end, maintain accurate employee records and support the organisation's statutory reporting and reconciliation requirements.

Working closely with Finance, People & Culture and other stakeholders, you will help ensure payroll changes are properly documented, authorised and processed. You will support a diverse workforce that includes scientific and professional services employees, students, fixed-term employees and grant-funded positions.

What we will trust you with

• Managing end-to-end payroll processing, including fortnightly, monthly and ad hoc payroll runs.
• Accurately calculating salaries, wages, allowances, loadings, overtime, deductions, back payments, leave payments and terminations.
• Maintaining accurate employee payroll records, including salary, banking, taxation, superannuation and employment changes.
• Managing leave balances and processing annual, personal, long service, parental and other forms of leave.
• Preparing payroll reports, variance checks, journals and reconciliations for review and approval.
• Supporting PAYG withholding, superannuation guarantee, Single Touch Payroll and other payroll compliance obligations.
• Responding to payroll enquiries from employees and managers in a timely, professional and confidential manner.
• Partnering with Finance and People & Culture to support onboarding, offboarding, payroll changes, reporting, audits and grant or cost allocation requirements.

Does this sound like you?

• Certificate III or IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping, Payroll Administration, Business Administration or a related discipline, or bring equivalent payroll experience.
• Previous experience in payroll administration, finance administration or accounts support.
• Sound working knowledge of Australian payroll requirements, including PAYG withholding, superannuation, leave entitlements and employment record keeping.
• Highly accurate and can confidently manage payroll activities within strict deadlines.
• Intermediate Microsoft Excel skills and are comfortable working with reports, reconciliations, formulas and data checks.
• Ability to interpret employment documentation, payroll instructions, policies, modern awards and employment conditions.
• You handle sensitive employee and salary information with discretion, integrity and professionalism.
• Experience with payroll or finance systems such as Employment Hero, Microsoft Dynamics BC, MicrOpay, ADP, Chris21, Aurion, SAP, Oracle or UKG will be highly regarded.
