Job summary

Vekta Automation, based in Perth, seeks a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design of automated machinery for timber frame and truss industries. You will drive concept through to manufacture, working with workshop, controls, software, and commissioning teams.

The role emphasizes delivering reliable, manufacturable solutions with strong mechatronics understanding and a track record of leading complex mechanical projects in a fast-paced OEM environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering or higher, accredited by Engineers Australia.
• 7+ years of mechanical design experience in industrial automation or machinery.
• Strong knowledge of mechatronic systems, servo drives, motion control, sensors, actuators and pneumatics.
• Experience producing full drawing packs to AS1100 with BOMs, weld symbols and tolerancing.
• Familiarity with AS/NZS 4024.1 and safety-related design practices.
• Advanced SolidWorks production design skills including assemblies and drawings.

Responsibilities

Vekta Automation is a Perth-based industrial automation OEM designing and manufacturing advanced machinery for the global timber frame and truss industry. We're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer with a strong practical engineering mindset and the ability to balance technical excellence, manufacturability, cost, reliability, and project delivery outcomes. You will take the lead on the mechanical design of custom automated equipment, guiding projects from initial concept through to manufacture and commissioning. This full-time role offers provide the opportunity to see your designs come to life, working closely with our workshop, controls engineers, software developers, and commissioning teams from concept through to customer handover.

Lead the mechanical design and development of automated industrial machinery from concept, analysis, and detailed design through to manufacture, commissioning, and continuous improvement.

Collaborate with electrical, controls, software, manufacturing, and service teams, to design, and deliver integrated automation and mechatronic solutions.

Conduct feasibility studies, engineering assessments, motion analysis, and system performance evaluations to optimise machine functionality, reliability, maintainability, and throughout.

Perform and document engineering calculations to ensure the strength, stiffness, and appropriate sizing of structural frames, linear systems, and drive components.

Design and model machinery in SolidWorks, producing manufacturing-ready drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation.

Contribute to the development, standardisation, and continuous improvement of machine architectures, design practices, and engineering standards across the product range.

Execute prototype testing, validation activities, root-cause investigations, and manufacturing reviews to verify design performance, reliability, and production readiness.

Support and mentor junior engineers, provide technical guidance and participate in peer design reviews while escalating significant technical risks, design decisions, or resource constraints as required.

Occasional travel to local, interstate, and international sites, to support commissioning troubleshooting, and customer installations as required.

Essential Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) or higher, accredited by Engineers Australia and eligible for Professional Engineer membership.

7+ years relevant experience in mechanical design within industrial automation, machinery, materials handling, robotics, gantries, CNC equipment, or similar environments.

Understanding of mechatronic systems, including servo drives, motion control, sensors, actuators, pneumatics, and industrial automation equipment (highly regarded).

Demonstrated experience producing full drawing packs to AS1100, including BOMs, weld symbols, geometric and dimensional tolerancing, and revision control.

Working knowledge of AS/NZS 4024.1 and its application in machinery design (risk assessment, guarding, safety circuits).

Advanced proficiency using SolidWorks (or similar) for production design, including assemblies and detailed drawings.

Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and deliver machinery designs from concept through to manufacture within a fast-paced OEM or manufacturing environment.

Experience with PDM or revision control systems, mechatronic systems, and hands-on manufacturing, commissioning, or field service environments will be highly regarded.
