Job summary

Thales Australia is seeking an on-site Senior HSE Leader to drive risk management excellence at the Garden Island naval base in Sydney. You will partner with operational teams to develop leadership capability, mentor HSE professionals, and shape a proactive safety culture across Defence and commercial clients.

You will lead critical risk management and investigations, ensuring effective controls, while aligning with regulatory and governance obligations to achieve operational excellence.

Qualifications

• Diploma or Cert IV in Work Health & Safety or related discipline.
• Proven success partnering with leaders in complex, high-risk environments.
• Strong knowledge of Australian WHS legislation and risk management.
• Experience leading incident investigations and root-cause analysis.
• Expertise in critical risk management including high-risk work and lifting operations.
• Experience with ISO-aligned HSE management systems and reporting platforms.
• Track record of influencing stakeholders, building capability and mentoring others.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills; able to engage at all levels.
• Availability to work on-site, 5 days a week.

Responsibilities

• Partner with leaders to strengthen safety capability and embed proactive safety culture.
• Drive critical risk management, ensuring effective controls are identified, implemented and verified.
• Lead significant incident investigations and deliver sustainable corrective actions.
• Mentor and develop HSE team members to build technical expertise and leadership.
• Influence safe operational outcomes through coaching, inspections, audits and frontline engagement.
• Ensure regulatory, customer and governance requirements are met while supporting operations.
• Champion continuous improvement across HSE systems, processes and performance.
