Hitachi Rail is seeking a Senior Hardware Design Engineer in Sydney to lead hardware design across rail infrastructure. You will own the technical integrity of hardware interfaces, mounting, cabling, and power distribution, ensuring cohesive design across the programme.

Qualifications

• Proven hardware design experience in rail or similar infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of cabling, rack layouts, installation, and power distribution.
• Understanding of earthing, bonding and EMI/EMC in physical design.
• Experience producing detailed installation-ready engineering docs.
• Ability to translate subsystem requirements into coherent hardware designs.
• Degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline.

Responsibilities

• Design and specify physical hardware components from subsystem inputs.
• Develop rack layouts and equipment configurations with space and access in mind.
• Define cable routing across stations, trackside, tunnel, depot, and facilities.
• Design fibre and copper terminations and power distribution requirements.
• Incorporate thermal/heat load constraints into hardware configurations.
• Create earthing, bonding arrangements per project requirements.
• Ensure EMI/EMC considerations are integrated into the physical design.
• Specify mounting solutions for racks, desks, walls and video walls.
• Define cable containment and installation constraints where applicable.

Job Description:

Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated Senior Hardware Design Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Sydney, Australia.

A Senior Hardware Design Engineer is required to ensure that this scope is designed in a coordinated, structured and technically consistent manner, with clear definition of physical interfaces, installation requirements, and compliance considerations. The role provides a single point of technical responsibility for hardware design, ensuring continuity of approach and alignment across the programme.

Key responsibilities:

The Senior Hardware Design Engineer is responsible for the design and specification of physical hardware components, based on subsystem inputs. This includes:

• Development of rack layouts and equipment configurations, ensuring appropriate space allocation, access, and maintainability
• Definition of cable routing approaches across stations, trackside, tunnel, depot, and facility environments
• Design of fibre and copper cable terminations, including physical interface requirements
• Establishment of power supply requirements, including load allocation and distribution considerations
• Incorporation of thermal and heat load constraints into hardware configurations
• Design of earthing and bonding arrangements in accordance with project requirements
• Consideration of EMI/EMC principles within physical design, including segregation and routing practices
• Definition of equipment mounting solutions, including racks, desks, walls, and specialist installations such as video walls
• Specification of cable containment and installation constraints, where applicable

Key skills, knowledge and experience:

• Proven experience in hardware design within rail or comparable infrastructure environments
• Strong technical knowledge of cabling systems, rack layouts, equipment installation, and power distribution
• Working understanding of earthing, bonding, and EMI/EMC principles as applied to physical design
• Experience in producing structured, detailed, and installation-ready engineering design documentation
• Ability to interpret and translate multi-discipline subsystem requirements into coherent hardware designs
• Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline
