Job summary

UGL is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer, Primary Systems to join the Utilities engineering team in North Sydney. You will lead the primary design for HV substations and related energy projects, coordinating interfaces and delivering constructable solutions.

You will mentor engineers, review outputs for technical accuracy, and work with project, tendering, construction and business development teams to meet client, safety, quality, programme and budget requirements.

Qualifications

• A four-year Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent qualification.
• Eight or more years’ experience in the primary design of HV plants or substations.
• Proven experience leading primary substation design packages across major utility, mining or renewable energy projects.
• Experience with clients such as Transgrid or Powerlink and large-scale BESS/solar/wind projects.
• Strong capability in HV cable design, earthing, lightning protection, insulation coordination, EMF and lighting design.
• Professional-level knowledge of primary design software such as CYMCAP and CDEGS; Chartered status preferred.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills; ability to manage competing priorities and collaborate across disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Lead primary design packages and coordinate engineering deliverables across tender and project phases.
• Develop and review substation configurations, plant layouts, busbar systems, electrical clearances, underground services and equipment specs.
• Oversee HV cable, earthing, lightning protection, insulation coordination, EMF and lighting design.
• Check and verify engineering work for technical accuracy and constructability.
• Plan and monitor design activities against delivery schedules, budgets and priorities.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers, designers and drafting personnel.
• Support customer/site visits, procurement, construction, commissioning and technical evaluations.
