Job summary

Council Jobs is seeking an engineering professional to join the Engineering Design Services Team as a Cadet, Graduate, Experienced or Senior Civil Design Engineer. The appointed level will determine scope, autonomy and remuneration within the grade range.

The role offers a Permanent, full-time position (35 hours per week) with a remuneration package dependent on qualifications, experience and competency level, plus access to flexible working arrangements and ongoing training."

Qualifications

• Proven experience in road, stormwater and sewer design, with knowledge of civil construction methods, project and contract management.
• Proven ability to deliver complex capital works projects and supervise multi-disciplinary teams.
• Excellent time management, organisational and communication skills.
• Current tertiary qualification in Civil Engineering or near completion.
• Registration or suitability for immediate registration (for Senior role) with CPEng/NER pathways.

Job description

We are looking for an engineering professional with exceptional civil design knowledge and experience to be a part of Councils Engineering Design Services Team.

This position may be filled at Cadet, Graduate, Experienced or Senior Engineer level depending on the successful applicant’s qualifications, skills, and experience. The appointed level will determine the scope of responsibilities, level of autonomy, and remuneration within the specified grade range.

Responsibilities will be commensurate with the level of appointment (Cadet, Graduate or Engineer).

As a Senior Civil Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

• Delivering complex road, stormwater and sewer design suitable for tender and construction.
• Providing high-quality engineering advice and support to internal stakeholders.
• Supervising and mentoring junior engineers and experienced drafters.
• Assisting the Manager of Design and Technical Services in the delivery of Council’s Long Term Financial Plan.

Applicants shall be able to demonstrate:

• Proven experience in road, stormwater and sewer design, with knowledge of civil construction methods, project and contract management.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and core design software such as 12d Model, Civil3D, and AutoCAD. Experience with SewerGEMS, GIS, and hydrology tools (TUFLOW, DRAINS, HEC-RAS, WaterRIDE) is highly regarded.
• Strong background in delivering complex capital works projects and applying engineering skills in contract management and administration.
• Demonstrated ability to lead multi-disciplinary engineering teams and deliver successful project outcomes.
• Experience supervising and mentoring junior staff, including Graduate and Design Engineers.
• Excellent time management, organisational, financial, and administrative skills, with sound business planning and computer literacy.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to negotiate, resolve conflicts, and present effectively.

As an Experienced Civil Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

• Delivering complex road, stormwater and sewer design suitable for tender and construction.
• Providing high-quality engineering advice and support to internal stakeholders.
• Assisting the Manager of Design and Technical Services in the delivery of Council’s Long Term Financial Plan.

Applicants shall be able to demonstrate:

• Proven experience in road, stormwater and sewer design, with knowledge of civil construction methods, project and contract management.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and a base level of experience using core design software packages.
• Solid time management, organisational, financial, and administrative skills, with sound business planning and computer literacy.

As a Cadet or Graduate Civil Design Engineer, you will be responsible for:

• Assisting senior staff in the delivery of complex road, stormwater and sewer designs suitable for tender and construction.
• Developing your engineering skillset through learning opportunities.

• An understanding of key engineering design principles and procedures.
• A clear willingness to learn and develop technical skillsets.
• Solid time management, organisational, financial, and administrative skills, with sound and computer literacy.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

As the successful applicant, you will have:

1. Tertiary qualifications (or currently undertaking) in Civil Engineering.
2. Registration or suitability for immediate registration (for Senior Civil Design Engineer applicants) with the following engineering registers:
   • Chartered Professional Engineer Register (CPEng)
   • National Engineering Register (NER)
3. Class C Driver’s Licence (or ability to obtain).
4. General Construction Induction Training Card (White) (or willingness to obtain).
