Job summary

Westpac Group is seeking a Senior Database Engineer to optimise and safeguard its SQL Server estate across on-prem and cloud instances. You will lead AI-enhanced database operations, using analytics to predict issues, accelerate resolution, and support data-driven decisions in capacity, performance, cost, and risk.

You will collaborate with technology teams and vendors to deliver secure, compliant services and participate in the on-call roster during major incidents and events.

Qualifications

• 8+ years hands-on database engineering experience with enterprise Microsoft SQL Server 2016+ environments, including SSIS, PBIRS, SSAS.
• Strong knowledge of SQL Server internals, relational design and performance engineering with advanced troubleshooting.
• Expertise in high availability and disaster recovery: Always-On AGs, Windows Server Failover Clustering, backup/recovery strategies.
• Automation using T-SQL, PowerShell, JSON; automating provisioning, patching and maintenance via DevOps.
• Experience applying AI/AIOps to database engineering, including anomaly detection and predictive capacity forecasting.

What’s the role?

The Senior Database Engineer will optimise and safeguard the bank’s mission‑critical SQL Server estate across thousands of on‑premises and cloud‑based instances. The role will lead the adoption of AI in database operations, using analytics and trending to predict issues, accelerate resolution, improve IT serviceability and support data‑driven decisions across capacity, performance, cost and risk.

The role will partner with technology teams and vendors to offer a highly available, secure and compliant database platform services to our customers. It will also participate in the on‑call roster and provide technical support to the during major incidents and events.

What do I need?

• 8+ years of hands‑on database engineering experience, supporting enterprise Microsoft SQL Server 2016+ environments, including SSIS, PBIRS, SSAS and large-scale SQL Server implementations.
• Strong knowledge of SQL Server internals, relational database design and performance engineering, with advanced troubleshooting and root‑cause analysis skills using Extended Events, performance data and monitoring telemetry.
• Strong experience designing, implementing and testing high availability and disaster recovery, including Always‑On Availability Groups, Windows Server Failover Clustering and backup and recovery strategies.
• Strong automation and scripting capability using T‑SQL, PowerShell, Json, with experience automating database provisioning, patching, maintenance and operational activities through DevOps and infrastructure‑as‑code practices.
• Experience applying AI and AIOps to database engineering and operations, including AI‑assisted development and query optimisation, anomaly detection, log and telemetry correlation, and predictive capacity forecasting.
• Strong data analytics capability using Power BIto develop performance baselines and identify capacity, availability, incident and change trends across database environments.
• Experience with cloud database platforms, including Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance and/or AWS RDS for SQL Server or other DBMS, including automated tuning and monitoring capabilities.
• Strong understanding of database security and compliance, including encryption, auditing, least‑privilege access and security controls within highly regulated environments.
• Experience supporting large‑scale, mission‑critical environments, ideally within banking or financial services, with the ability to translate technical findings into recommendations across capacity, software currency, cloud migration, cost optimisation and risk.
• Flexibility to participate in an after‑hours/weekend on‑call roster and provide extended support during major incidents.
• Highly desirable: Hands‑on experience implementing or supporting other database technologies such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Neo4j.
• Desirable: Experience supporting SAP environments and Unix based platforms.
