Westpac is seeking a Senior Database Engineer - SQL Server to optimise and safeguard the bank’s SQL Server estate across on-premises and cloud. You will lead AI adoption in database operations, using analytics to predict issues, accelerate resolution and drive capacity, performance, cost and risk decisions.

The role requires 8+ years of hands-on experience, SQL Server 2016+ with SSIS/SBIRS/SSAS, and strong automation, cloud, security and compliance skills.

What’s the role?

The Senior Database Engineerwill optimise and safeguard the bank’s mission-critical SQL Server estate across thousands of on-premises and cloud-based instances. The role will lead the adoption of AI in database operations, using analytics and trending to predict issues, accelerate resolution, improve IT serviceability and support data-driven decisions across capacity, performance, cost and risk.

What do I need?

• 8+ years of hands-on database engineering experience, supporting enterprise Microsoft SQL Server 2016+ environments, including SSIS, PBIRS, SSAS and large-scale SQL Server implementations.
• Strong knowledge of SQL Server internals, relational database design and performance engineering, with advanced troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills using Extended Events, performance data and monitoring telemetry.
• Strong experience designing, implementing and testing high availability and disaster recovery, including Always-On Availability Groups, Windows Server Failover Clustering and backup and recovery strategies.
• Strong automation and scripting capability using T-SQL, PowerShell, Json, with experience automating database provisioning, patching, maintenance and operational activities through DevOps and infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Experience applying AI and AIOps to database engineering and operations, including AI-assisted development and query optimisation, anomaly detection, log and telemetry correlation, and predictive capacity forecasting.
• Strong data analytics capability using Power BIto develop performance baselines and identify capacity, availability, incident and change trends across database environments.
• Experience with cloud database platforms, including Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance and/or AWS RDS for SQL Server or other DBMS, including automated tuning and monitoring capabilities.
• Strong understanding of database security and compliance, including encryption, auditing, least-privilege access and security controls within highly regulated environments.
• Experience supporting large-scale, mission-critical environments, ideally within banking or financial services, with the ability to translate technical findings into recommendations across capacity, software currency, cloud migration, cost optimisation and risk.
• Flexibility to participate in an after-hours/weekend on-call roster and provide extended support during major incidents.
• Highly desirable: Hands-on experience implementing or supporting other database technologies such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB or Neo4j.
• Desirable: Experience supporting SAP environments and Unix based platforms.
