Job summary

SMEC is seeking a Senior to Principal Environmental Scientist/Engineer (Contaminated Land) to join our Sydney team. You will lead complex investigations and remediation projects, delivering high-quality reports and mentoring junior staff.

You will provide strategic guidance on contaminated land, PFAS, and hazardous materials, while managing budgets and stakeholder relationships across infrastructure, energy, water, and resources projects.

Qualifications

• Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Certified Environmental Practitioner.
• 8+ years’ experience in contaminated land, PFAS, and hazardous materials.
• Excellent report writing and communication skills.
• Willingness to travel for short-term fieldwork.
• Current driver’s licence and ability to undertake field-based work.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver complex contaminated land investigations, assessments, and remediation projects
• Provide technical leadership and oversight of high-quality interpretive reporting
• Manage project budgets, schedules, resources, and client expectations
• Develop and maintain relationships with clients, regulators, and stakeholders
• Identify and pursue new business opportunities and contribute to proposals
• Mentor and support the development of junior and mid-level environmental professionals
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across major infrastructure, energy, water, and resource projects
• Provide strategic advice on contaminated land, PFAS, hazardous materials, and environmental risk management
