Job summary

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) in Australia seeks a senior property claims professional to lead end-to-end management of complex claims. You will drive strategy, assess coverage, manage external experts and ensure fair, timely outcomes for our clients and brokers.

You will collaborate with underwriting, risk engineering and actuarial teams to identify trends and improve service while representing BHSI at client meetings and industry events.

Take ownership of a diverse portfolio of commercial and corporate property, and energy claims, driving matters from first notification through to resolution with technical expertise, sound judgment and a customer-focused approach to deliver fair, timely and commercially effective outcomes.

As a senior claims professional, you will lead claim strategy, make coverage and reserving decisions, manage external experts and advisers, and build trusted relationships with customers and broker partners. You will also work closely with underwriting and risk engineering teammates to translate claims insights into stronger portfolio decisions, improved service and continuous improvement.

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Own the end-to-end management of complex property claims from first notification through to resolution in line with BHSI Claims Service Standards.
• Analyse policy coverage, material damage quantum and business interruption exposures to make timely, fair and well-reasoned claims decisions and communicate outcomes clearly to customers, brokers and other stakeholders.
• Assess exposure, establish and maintain appropriate reserves, and report significant claim developments with clear rationale and commercial discipline.
• Lead investigations and claim strategy by engaging and managing loss adjusters, lawyers, forensic accountants, engineers and other specialists to achieve effective claim outcomes.
• Build trusted customer and broker relationships through responsive, professional and transparent claims handling, particularly on complex or high-value matters.
• Partner with underwriting, risk engineering, actuarial and operations teammates to identify claim trends, provide market insights and contribute to product, portfolio and service improvements.
• Represent BHSI in the market through client meetings, broker engagement, site inspections, mediations, industry events and other stakeholder interactions.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• Advanced property claims expertise: strong technical capability across complex property claims, including Industrial Special Risk and business interruption exposures.
• Strategic and analytical thinking: ability to evaluate complex factual, technical and financial information to develop practical claim strategies and resolution plans.
• Customer and broker partnership: build credibility and trust through clear communication, responsiveness and a solutions-focused approach.
• Commercial judgment: understand the broader impact of claims decisions on customers, brokers, underwriting performance and portfolio outcomes.
• Organisation and execution: effectively manage competing priorities, large losses and complex matters with ownership, accuracy, sound escalation and consistent follow-through.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Typically five or more years of experience managing complex property and energy claims, including Industrial Special Risk and business interruption claims, or equivalent demonstrated capability.
• Demonstrated experience analysing coverage, quantifying loss exposures, developing claim strategies, managing external experts and negotiating effective claim outcomes.
• Tertiary qualifications, ANZIIF qualifications, loss adjusting credentials or other insurance-related qualifications are desirable where they strengthen technical capability and professional development.
