Job summary

Megaport seeks a senior backend engineer to lead and contribute to the design and evolution of our core platform. You will own backend components, design scalable APIs, and work across time zones in a remote-first environment.

You will balance technical debt relief with feature delivery, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive product success. Hybrid coworking options support flexible workstyle.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of software development experience in Java and/or Kotlin.
• Proven experience building backend services and tools within web application ecosystems.
• Ability to act as a technical lead for small projects (typically up to 4 developers).
• Strong data modelling skills with significant experience using SQL and Hibernate.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
• Bonus: Familiarity with networking concepts such as IP routing or MPLS.

Responsibilities

• Product Development & Ownership - Evolve core product, modernise legacy components, add features, shape long-term architecture.
• System Maintenance & Technical Improvements - Reduce technical debt, improve performance & reliability, scale platform decisions.
• API Design & Delivery - Build/maintain secure RESTful APIs, adhere to standards, versioning, monitoring.
• Quality & Release Engineering - Write tests, code reviews, CI/CD improvements.
• Mentorship & Technical Leadership - Grow junior engineers, pair programming, promote sound design.
