Job summary

Valiant Finance, an Australian fintech startup, is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to shape the platform and drive scalable backend systems.

You will design RESTful APIs, integrate with services like Salesforce, Auth0, and Cloudflare, and maintain cloud infrastructure across AWS/GCP. The role involves collaboration with Product, Design, and cross-functional teams in a remote-friendly, hybrid environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of commercial Ruby on Rails experience.
• Experience integrating with multiple external APIs.
• Experience with PostgreSQL and database design/performance tuning.
• Experience with AWS, GCP, or Heroku.
• Experience with RSpec testing.
• Experience with Sidekiq for background jobs.
• Strong REST API design for public and private use.
• Proficiency with Jira or Linear.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Are you a Senior Ruby on Rails Backend Engineer looking to join a fun, fast paced fintech environment.

Our engineering team is remote-friendly but we work from our Surry Hills office 2-3 times a week to collaborate. We're looking for a candidate who is passionate about engineering and technology, can solve technical problems and is able to communicate problems and solutions with ease.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll be instrumental in shaping the future of our platform. Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing and building RESTful APIs for our front-end applications and partners
• Integrating with a range of external services such as Salesforce, Auth0, Cloudflare, and more
• Architecting solutions that meet our high availability, security, and performance requirements
• Maintaining our infrastructure on a major cloud provider to support our rapid growth
• Writing well-structured, tested, and documented code that's a pleasure to maintain
• Working closely with our Product, Design, and other teams to refine deliverables and bring new features to life

What We're Looking For

We're seeking a passionate backend engineer who can solve complex technical problems and communicate solutions with ease.

Required Experience

• Minimum 5 years of commercial Ruby on Rails experience
• Proven experience integrating with multiple external APIs
• Experience with database design and performance tuning, particularly with PostgreSQL
• Experience designing and maintaining infrastructure with AWS, GCP, or Heroku
• Experience with testing frameworks like Rspec
• Experience with high-volume background job processing frameworks like Sidekiq
• Strong experience designing and maintaining both public and private REST APIs
• Proficiency with development tools like Linear or Jira
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

Bonus Points

• Experience with security best practices (e.g., OWASP, STRIDE)
• Experience with synchronising data between distributed systems
• Experience in high-volume production environments with strict availability SLAs
• Knowledge of the financial services industry (lending or corporate finance)
• Experience navigating GDPR and/or SOC2
