JLegal in Sydney is seeking a Senior Associate or Special Counsel to join an established defendant insurance practice. You will handle complex healthcare, professional indemnity and liability matters with ownership of your files and direct client relationships.

You will engage in a broad mix of contentious and advisory work, with opportunities for progression and development alongside experienced practitioners in a collaborative, growing team.

Qualifications

• Approximately 7+ years' post-admission experience.
• Experience in defendant insurance litigation and dispute resolution.
• Exposure to healthcare, medical negligence, professional indemnity, public liability or related liability matters.
• Ability to manage complex files with autonomy.
• Strong drafting, advisory and litigation skills.
• Commercial, practical approach to resolving disputes.
• Confidence managing client relationships and stakeholders.
• Interest in developing junior lawyers and the team.

Senior Associate, Professional Indemnity

An opportunity is available for an experienced Senior Associate or Special Counsel to join an established defendant insurance practice in Sydney, working across complex healthcare, professional indemnity and liability matters.

The position offers a broad mix of contentious and advisory work, with scope to build on your existing experience across areas such as medical negligence and healthcare claims, professional indemnity, public liability, coverage and broader insurance disputes.

Working alongside experienced senior practitioners, you will have genuine ownership of your matters, direct client relationships and the opportunity to play an active role within a collaborative and growing practice.

For senior lawyers looking beyond Special Counsel level, there may also be scope to discuss longer-term progression and career development opportunities.

The Role

Depending on your background and experience, your work may include:

• Acting in complex defendant insurance and liability claims.
  
• Managing healthcare and medical negligence matters on behalf of insurers, healthcare providers and other clients.
  
• Advising on professional indemnity claims across a range of professions and industries.
  
• Handling public liability and broader liability matters.
  
• Advising on coverage, policy interpretation, indemnity and claims strategy.
  
• Managing litigation from initial instructions through to negotiated resolution or court proceedings.
  
• Preparing advice, pleadings, evidence, submissions and other litigation documents.
  
• Working closely with counsel, experts and other external stakeholders.
  
• Developing strategies for the efficient and commercial resolution of claims.
  
• Managing your own files with appropriate support from senior practitioners.
  
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with insurer, corporate and institutional clients.
  
• Supervising, mentoring and supporting junior lawyers where appropriate.
  

About You

We are interested in speaking with experienced defendant insurance lawyers operating at Senior Associate, Special Counsel or equivalent level.

Ideally, you will have:

• Approximately 7+ years' post-admission experience, although candidates will be considered based on the relevance of their background.
  
• Experience in defendant insurance litigation and dispute resolution.
  
• Exposure to healthcare, medical negligence, professional indemnity, public liability or related liability matters.
  
• The ability to manage complex files with a high degree of autonomy.
  
• Strong technical drafting, advisory and litigation skills.
  
• A practical and commercially focused approach to resolving disputes.
  
• Confidence managing client relationships and communicating with key stakeholders.
  
• An interest in contributing to the development of junior lawyers and the broader team.
  

Candidates do not need experience across every area. Lawyers with a strong background in one or more relevant defendant insurance streams are encouraged to enquire.
