Job summary

Nearmap in Sydney, Australia, is seeking a Principal AI Platform Engineer to be the architect and technical owner of the ML infrastructure powering Nearmap AI initiatives. You’ll lead 3–4 ML systems engineers, set the platform vision, and drive evolution across Kubernetes, GPU training, real-time endpoints, and MLOps.

You’ll build scalable systems on AWS and GCP, champion cost efficiency and reliability, and collaborate with Data Science teams to translate challenges into a robust platform

Qualifications

• 10+ years in software engineering with 4+ years building/operating large-scale infrastructure or distributed systems.
• Proven experience leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.
• Deep production-level Kubernetes experience, including GPU scheduling.
• Expert-level Python and judgment on failure, backpressure, and cost at scale.
• Hands-on cloud infra experience on AWS and GCP with IaC (Terraform or Pulumi).
• Strong grounding in Git, CI/CD, monitoring, alerting, and automated testing.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS/Engineering or related field.

Responsibilities

• Define and own the technical roadmap for core ML infrastructure (Kubernetes workflows, distributed training, batch/inference at scale).
• Lead and mentor a team of ML systems engineers and drive technical hiring.
• Make critical design calls and evaluate new technologies across frameworks and databases.
• Ensure observability, cost efficiency, and incident response for production systems.
• Partner with Data Science and ML Engineering to translate challenges into a platform roadmap.
