Job summary

Westpac in Australia seeks a senior, hands-on AI Engineer to join the Chief AI Innovation Office within Data, Digital & AI. You will design, build and operate AI capabilities for enterprise scale, with a focus on safe, reliable production systems and governance.

You will mentor engineers, establish reusable patterns and ensure responsible AI from concept to production, collaborating with product, risk, security and business teams. Sydney-based with hybrid work arrangements.

Qualifications

• Significant hands-on AI engineering experience in a complex corporate/enterprise environment.
• Strong record of delivering AI/ML/LLM-enabled systems deployed in production with governance and monitoring.
• Solid software foundations: Python, APIs, cloud services, distributed systems, CI/CD, automated testing.
• Deep practical experience with LLMs, RAG, embeddings, agents, evaluation frameworks, orchestration and model lifecycle management.
• Experience embedding safety, privacy, compliance, explainability, reliability and operational risk controls into AI solutions.
• Ability to shape technical direction, raise engineering standards and lead through ambiguity and change.
• Clear communication across engineering, product, delivery, risk and senior stakeholders.

• Lead through technical credibility, mentoring, and reusable patterns.
• Take AI capabilities from experimentation to production with testing, deployment and monitoring.
• Advance security, privacy, compliance, and governance in AI solutions from conception to production.
• Balance model quality, latency, cost, risk and customer impact in fast-moving delivery environments.
• Collaborate with product, platform, data, risk, security and business teams to scale AI safely.
• Review designs and code, and establish durable patterns for safe production delivery.
• Lead investigations and durable fixes for complex AI system issues.
