Job summary

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is seeking a Senior Advisor, Policy & Partnerships in Canberra. You will work at the intersection of public policy, media and government, researching and analytically shaping policy positions and executive advice.

You will prepare submissions, briefs and policy material, engage with government bodies and industry stakeholders, and coordinate across ABC to deliver well-evidenced policy outputs for senior leadership.

Qualifications

• Experience in policy research and analysis, including industry/regulatory context.
• Strong ability to translate complex issues into clear policy positions and executive briefings.
• Proven experience drafting submissions, briefs and policy material for senior or external audiences.
• Familiarity with parliamentary committees, Senate Estimates and government processes.
• Excellent written communication with ability to produce concise, well-evidenced material.
• Experience within Federal Government and/or the media sector is highly regarded.
• Knowledge of the Australian media and broadcasting landscape and public service media.
• Tertiary qualifications in public policy, law, political science, economics, communications, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.

About The Role

As Senior Advisor, Policy & Partnerships, you’ll work at the intersection of public policy, media and government, contributing to issues that affect the ABC and the future of public service media in Australia.

Reporting to the Senior Executive, Policy & Regulatory Affairs, you’ll research and analyse government, parliamentary, regulatory and industry developments, and translate complex information into clear, well‑evidenced policy positions, submissions and executive advice.

What You’ll Do

• Research and analyse government policy, legislation, parliamentary activity and regulatory developments affecting the ABC.
• Monitor and report on developments across the Australian media and broadcasting sector, including communications, digital platforms and public service media.
• Draft submissions, position papers, briefing notes, correspondence, talking points, Senate Estimates material and executive briefings.
• Maintain policy briefs, issue registers and supporting material on current and emerging matters.
• Support engagement with Commonwealth departments and agencies, parliamentary offices, regulators and industry bodies and leading cultural institutions.
• Prepare briefs and stakeholder intelligence for senior‑level engagements.
• Coordinate input from across the ABC to produce accurate, consistent and well‑evidenced policy material.

About You

You’ll be an experienced policy researcher and writer with the ability to quickly understand complex issues, identify what matters and communicate it with clarity and precision.

You’ll be confident working with primary sources including legislation, parliamentary material, government policy and regulatory documents, and bring experience from Federal Government and/or the media sector.

You’ll Bring

• Demonstrated experience in policy research and analysis, including industry analysis and reporting.
• Strong experience drafting submissions, briefs and other policy material for senior or external audiences.
• Previous experience working with parliamentary committees and processes, with an understanding of Senate Estimates, government consultation and budget processes.
• Highly developed written communication skills and the ability to produce concise, accurate and well‑evidenced material.
• Experience within Federal Government and/or the media sector, with experience across both highly regarded.
• Sound knowledge of the Australian media and broadcasting landscape and the role of public service media.
• Strong judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
• Relevant tertiary qualifications in public policy, law, political science, economics, communications, media studies or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.

Existing networks across government, media or relevant industry bodies will be highly regarded.
