Job summary

IAG Defence & National Security in Canberra is seeking an experienced SATCOM Systems Architect to lead engineering and architecture across Defence capability programs. The role focuses on SATCOM, communications architectures, and collaboration with procurement teams to deliver critical capability outcomes.

The ideal candidate has extensive defence experience, NV1 clearance, and a track record in developing technical requirements, evaluating supplier solutions, and ensuring interoperability

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years in SATCOM, communications systems engineering or related Defence environments.
  • Experience supporting Defence acquisition, sustainment or capability delivery programs.
  • Experience developing and reviewing procurement artefacts such as SORs, SOWs, specs and evaluation criteria.
  • Strong understanding of SATCOM, architectures, terminal systems, network design and integration.
  • Experience with Defence procurement processes and ASDEFCON environments.
  • Excellent analytical, writing and stakeholder skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide SATCOM and communications architecture expertise to support Defence capability acquisition and sustainment activities.
  • Support the development, review and refinement of technical requirements, SORs, SOWs and related procurement documentation.
  • Contribute to procurement by advising during market approaches, evaluations and supplier engagements.
  • Assess supplier solutions to ensure alignment with capability requirements and project objectives.
  • Support contract management and supplier performance activities with technical input.
  • Analyse technical risks and develop mitigation strategies for informed decisions.
  • Provide recommendations on SATCOM systems, architectures, terminal systems and interoperability.
  • Engage with Defence stakeholders to support capability delivery.
  • Ensure compliance with Defence engineering, procurement and governance frameworks.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced SATCOM Systems Architect to support the delivery of complex Defence communications and command-and-control capability programs. This role requires a highly organised and technically skilled professional who can provide SATCOM and communications architecture expertise while supporting procurement, contracting and capability development activities within a complex Defence environment. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership, support procurement and acquisition activities, contribute to supplier performance management, and work collaboratively with project stakeholders to deliver capability outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide SATCOM and communications architecture expertise to support Defence capability acquisition and sustainment activities.
  • Support the development, review and refinement of technical requirements, Statements of Requirement (SORs), Statements of Work (SOWs) and related procurement documentation.
  • Contribute to procurement and contracting activities by providing technical advice during market approaches, evaluation activities and supplier engagements.
  • Assess supplier technical solutions, architectures and design documentation to ensure alignment with capability requirements and project objectives.
  • Support contract management and supplier performance activities by providing technical input into reviews, performance assessments and contract change proposals.
  • Analyse technical, integration and capability risks and develop mitigation strategies to support informed decision-making.
  • Provide technical advice and recommendations relating to SATCOM systems, communications architectures, terminal systems, network integration and interoperability requirements.
  • Engage with Defence stakeholders, project teams, suppliers and subject matter experts to support successful capability delivery.
  • Support compliance with Defence engineering, technical, procurement and governance frameworks.
Requirements
  • Minimum 8 years' experience in SATCOM, communications systems engineering, systems architecture or related Defence capability environments.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Defence acquisition, sustainment or capability delivery programs.
  • Experience developing and reviewing technical procurement artefacts including Statements of Requirement, Statements of Work, technical specifications and evaluation criteria.
  • Strong understanding of SATCOM systems, communications architectures, terminal systems, network design and systems integration.
  • Experience supporting technical evaluations, market approaches and supplier assessments within Defence or Commonwealth environments.
  • Knowledge of Defence procurement and contracting processes, including experience working within ASDEFCON environments.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and technical writing skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to work effectively across complex multi-disciplinary teams.
Essential Requirements
  • Current AGSVA NV1 Security Clearance.
  • Relevant qualifications in Procurement, Contract Management, Business or a related discipline.
  • Ability to work onsite in Canberra.
