About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Client Lead / Senior Bookkeeper to join our growing team and take ownership of a portfolio of small and medium business clients.
This is more than a traditional bookkeeping role. You will combine strong technical bookkeeping skills with client relationship management, team leadership, workflow coordination and practical business support.
You will be responsible for managing client bookkeeping files, communicating directly with clients, processing payroll, preparing BAS and IAS working papers, producing financial reports and identifying opportunities to improve the way clients manage their finances.
The role also involves mentoring and supporting other bookkeeping staff, attending client meetings and meeting with prospective clients to understand their needs and assist with developing appropriate solutions.
You will work closely with the Directors and accounting team, with BAS and IAS prepared by you and reviewed and lodged by senior staff.
The ideal candidate is technically strong, organised and confident dealing directly with business owners. You should enjoy taking ownership of your work, supporting your team and building long-term relationships with clients.
Key Responsibilities
Client Management & Advisory Support
- Manage a portfolio of bookkeeping clients across a range of industries
- Act as a key point of contact for day-to-day client communication
- Build strong client relationships through proactive communication and follow-up
- Meet with clients to understand their needs and provide practical bookkeeping and business support
- Attend client premises where required to undertake bookkeeping, systems or process work
- Help clients understand their financial position and business performance
- Identify opportunities to improve client systems, processes and bookkeeping practices
- Meet with prospective and potential new clients to understand their needs and assist with developing proposals and service solutions
- Escalate relevant issues and opportunities to the Directors and accounting team
- Mentor, supervise and support junior bookkeeping staff
- Provide training and guidance to team members as required
- Assist team members with technical bookkeeping queries and client matters
- Support the Directors in maintaining high standards of client service and bookkeeping quality
- Promote a collaborative and supportive team environment
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date Xero files
- Perform bank, credit card, loan and balance sheet reconciliations
- Complete month-end and quarter-end bookkeeping procedures
- Prepare client files for accountant review and year-end processing
- Maintain organised and review-ready financial records
Reporting & Business Support
- Prepare financial and KPI reports for clients
- Assist clients to understand cash flow and financial performance
- Provide practical support with Xero reporting and bookkeeping systems
- Work with the accounting team to support broader client outcomes
Systems & Process Improvement
- Maintain organised digital records and client documentation
- Improve internal bookkeeping processes and workflows
- Use systems including Xero, Dext, Hubdoc, Xero Practice Manager and related software
- Assist with workflow coordination and process documentation
- Look for ways to make bookkeeping more efficient for both clients and the team
Skills & Experience
We are looking for someone who has:
- 5+ years' bookkeeping experience, preferably within a bookkeeping firm or public practice environment
- Strong working knowledge of Xero
- Advanced understanding of Xero reporting
- Experience with Xero Practice Manager (XPM), Dext, Hubdoc or similar systems
- Strong understanding of GST, BAS preparation, payroll and superannuation requirements
- Experience mentoring, supervising or training other staff
- Excellent organisation and time management skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- The ability to manage multiple clients and competing deadlines
- Professional communication and client relationship skills
- Confidence meeting with business owners and prospective clients
- The ability to work independently, take initiative and manage your own workflow
