Job summary

Inner West Council in Sydney is seeking a Roadworks Approvals Officer / Engineer to protect and manage road, footpath, cycling and stormwater infrastructure by overseeing third-party works in the public domain.

You will assess road occupancy, road openings and restoration activities, ensure compliance with council standards and legislation, and provide expert advice to customers and stakeholders while coordinating outcomes with developers, utilities and residents.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in an appropriate discipline.
• Experience in the successful management of 3rd party access to, impact on and interface with municipal infrastructure.
• Working knowledge of the Roads Act, Council’s powers and duties as a Roads Authority, and other agency and public utility legislation and procedures relating to access to road reserves and public lands.
• Knowledge and understanding of road and infrastructure technical specifications and standards.
• Strong interpersonal & communication skills together with proven ability for negotiation and conflict resolution.
• Ability to represent Council to external organisations, customers and members of the public.
• Current NSW Class C Driver’s License.

About the role

The Roadworks Approvals Officer / Engineer plays a key role in protecting and managing Council's road, footpath, cycling and stormwater infrastructure by overseeing third-party access and works within the public domain. This position is responsible for assessing and managing road occupancy, road opening and restoration activities, while ensuring compliance with Council standards, legislative requirements and community expectations.

This varied role combines technical assessment, stakeholder engagement and regulatory oversight. It involves managing permit applications, providing expert advice to customers and stakeholders, monitoring compliance, and coordinating outcomes that minimise impacts on public assets and the broader community. The position also contributes to the delivery of key Council initiatives, policy development and continuous improvement activities.

Working collaboratively with developers, contractors, utility providers, residents and internal teams, the Roadworks Approvals Officer / Engineer helps ensure the safe, efficient and sustainable management of public infrastructure across the Inner West.

Remuneration

$89,733.28 to $115,437.92 + 12% Superannuation

Civil Liabilities Allowance subject to eligibility as per the Award

Some of the required skills, experience and qualifications
