Job summary

Sutherland Shire Council is rolling out Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) and seeks a Waste Educator to engage residents, schools and groups across the Shire. You will lead education activities, represent Council at events and drive participation and positive environmental outcomes.

Ideal candidates have experience in education or community engagement and strong communication skills, with a passion for sustainability and customer-facing work.

Help deliver the biggest change to household waste collection in a generation.

Over the coming months, Sutherland Shire Council will roll out Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO), transforming how our community manages household waste and helping divert thousands of tonnes of organic material from landfill.

We're looking for an energetic, people-focused Waste Educator to help make it happen.

This is your chance to be at the centre of a major community change program, engaging with residents, schools, community groups and stakeholders to drive awareness, participation and positive environmental outcomes across the Shire.

What you'll do

• Deliver community education and engagement activities supporting the rollout of FOGO.
• Represent Council at events, workshops, presentations and community activations.
• Develop and deliver clear, engaging waste and recycling education.
• Support campaigns promoting resource recovery initiatives, including the Community Recycling Centre.
• Build positive relationships with residents and stakeholders.
• Help turn awareness into action through effective behaviour change programs.

What you'll bring

• Experience in education, community engagement, communications or customer-facing roles.
• Outstanding communication and presentation skills.

Strong organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities.

• A passion for sustainability and making a difference in the community.
• Qualifications in Education, Communications, Sustainability, Environmental Science, Business or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
• Current Class C Driver Licence.
• Knowledge of waste, recycling or resource recovery programs.
• Local Government experience.

• Hours of work: TemporaryFull Time, working 35 hours per week with the option of a 19 day month using Council's ADO (Accrued Day Off) system. Position is expected to be available up to 12 months.
