Job summary

IT Alliance seeks a hands-on Principal Python Software Engineer for an offsite-remote role focused on data platform and DevOps. NV1 security clearance is required. Location is Canberra with remote work across Australia.

You will design and implement Python-based data processing systems, containerised workloads with Docker and Kubernetes, and secure APIs, while enhancing CI/CD, testing, observability and platform resilience.

Mandatory Skills & Experience

We are seeking an exceptional Principal Python Software Engineer with extensive experience in distributed data platforms, cloud-native architecture, Kubernetes and DevOps engineering.

The successful consultant will contribute to the enhancement and modernisation of a sophisticated data management and analysis platform supporting critical Commonwealth operational capabilities.

This is a highly technical, hands‑on position requiring an experienced engineer who can design, develop, integrate, modernise and maintain complex Python-based data processing applications and distributed systems

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and enhance Python applications, reusable libraries, APIs, SDKs and distributed data processing components.
• Integrate data parsing, enrichment, normalisation and schema mapping capabilities into existing data processing workflows.
• Develop functionality to reprocess previously ingested data and enrichments through web‑based interfaces.
• Design and implement secure data export and file‑processing automation.
• Refactor existing Python services and processor frameworks into reusable libraries supporting independently deployable containerised applications.
• Develop and maintain Python API client libraries with synchronous and asynchronous interfaces, generated from OpenAPI specifications.
• Implement secure authentication, token management, persistent connection pooling and integration with Python notebooks.
• Design and optimise distributed data processing solutions using Apache Cassandra and Apache Pulsar.
• Develop, deploy and troubleshoot containerised workloads using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, deployment reliability, observability and platform resilience.
• Work closely with technical stakeholders to understand requirements, assess design options and deliver production‑quality solutions.
• Produce architecture documentation, technical specifications, testing evidence and operational runbooks.
• Participate in Agile ceremonies, technical reviews and knowledge‑transfer activities.

Essential Technical Skills

• Expert‑level Python software engineering and object‑oriented software design.
• Demonstrated hands‑on experience with Apache Cassandra.
• Demonstrated hands‑on experience with Apache Pulsar.
• Strong Kubernetes, Docker and containerised application development expertise.
• Proven experience designing distributed, scalable and resilient data processing platforms.
• Advanced REST API, OpenAPI, SDK and Python library development experience.
• Experience implementing synchronous and asynchronous Python interfaces.
• Strong CI/CD engineering, automated testing and DevOps practices.
• Experience with secure authentication, access tokens and API integration.
• Proven experience leading the architecture and technical delivery of complex data platforms.
• Strong documentation, troubleshooting and stakeholder communication capabilities.

Highly Desirable

• Experience with FastAPI, Django or comparable Python application frameworks.
• Experience generating Python clients from OpenAPI specifications.
• Experience with Python notebooks, authentication workflows and operating‑system keychain integration.
• Experience with Kubernetes cluster reliability, observability and disaster recovery.
• Experience developing extensible, event‑driven data processing systems.
• Knowledge of secure software engineering within Commonwealth or similarly regulated environments.
• Experience with telecommunications data, digital forensics, data enrichment or law‑enforcement systems.

What We Are Looking For

An accomplished, hands‑on Principal Engineer who has personally designed and developed Python‑based distributed systems and can demonstrate substantial practical experience across Cassandra, Pulsar, Kubernetes, APIs, software architecture and DevOps.
