Job summary

Y Projects on Malvern is seeking a Project Architect / Design Lead to own design end-to-end—from initial client conversation through to fully resolved documentation and interiors. You’ll lead design across briefs, concepts, planning, development and the interiors with a collaborative build team backing your vision.

We’re a small, friendly practice focused on contemporary extensions to heritage homes, with a passion for craftsmanship and client experience.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in residential design.
• Genuine contemporary design flair and a strong sense of style.
• Solid grasp of ResCode, town planning, NCC Vol 2 and the relevant Australian Standards.

Responsibilities

• Leading design end to end - brief, concept, planning, design development, interiors, the lot
• Being the face for clients through the design phase (warmth and trust matter as much as design ability here)
• Producing resolved documentation in Sketchup & Revit, with renders in D5 / Enscape / Lumion for presentation
• Working hand in hand with the build team so every project lands on budget, not just on brief
• Helping grow this side of the business alongside us

Project Architect / Design Lead — Y Projects (Malvern)

Y Projects is a design-and-construct practice specialising in contemporary extensions on heritage homes across inner-city Melbourne, typically in the $1–3M range. We design and build under the one roof. Our motivation comes from a genuine enthusiasm for considered contemporary design, excellent craftsmanship, and helping clients get the most out of their budget.

We are reshaping the traditional client-builder relationship by running an integrated design, costing and build process — one that prioritises not just the quality of the finished home, but the experience of getting there. Here’s the thing that makes this different. This isn't a drafting role buried inside a builder. And it isn't a design role with its wings clipped by a construction team second-guessing every move. It's the opposite - you own the design, front to back, from the first client conversation through to fully resolved documentation and interiors. Behind you is a full construction team that genuinely loves design, gets your work built properly, and solves the build ability and budget problems most designers never get visibility on.

What you'd be doing:

• Leading design end to end - brief, concept, planning, design development, interiors, the lot

What we're after:

• 7+ years in residential design - architectural extensions a big plus
• Genuine contemporary design flair and a strong sense of style
• Solid grasp of ResCode, town planning, NCC Vol 2 and the relevant Australian Standards
• Strong in Revit and SketchUp; comfortable across the MS tool set
• Autonomous, organised, warm, and actually enjoys the client side of the work
